A-Rod, Sheff win Silver Slugger awards
Duo recognized by American League coaches, managers
By Mark Feinsand / MLB.com
NEW YORK -- Awards season kicked off on Monday, as Alex Rodriguez and Gary
Sheffield were two of the nine American League recipients of the 2005 Silver
Slugger awards.
Rodriguez, who was beaten out last season by Baltimore's Melvin Mora,
captured his eighth Silver Slugger, having won in 1996, as well as each year
from 1998-2003.
"It's a special award, and I am very honored," Rodriguez said. "While I have
been fortunate to win eight Silver Sluggers, this one is extra special
because it's my first at third base, where there are so many outstanding
hitters. I'm very thankful."
A-Rod led the American League with 48 home runs, 124 runs scored, a .610
slugging percentage and a 1.031 OPS. He ranked second in the league with a
.321 average and .421 on-base percentage, also finishing in the top five in
RBIs (130) and walks (91).
Rodriguez is also expected to contend for a Gold Glove at third base, as well
as the AL MVP Award.
Sheffield earned his fourth career Silver Slugger, his second in two years
with the Yankees. Sheffield also won in 2003 with Atlanta and 1996 with
Florida.
Sheffield hit .291 with 34 home runs and 123 RBIs this season. He ranked
eighth in the AL in homers and walks (78) and fifth in RBIs.
Other Silver Slugger winners in the AL were Texas' Mark Teixeira and Alfonso
Soriano, Baltimore's Miguel Tejada, Los Angeles' Vladimir Guerrero, and
Boston's Manny Ramirez, David Ortiz and Jason Varitek.
Louisville Slugger's Silver Slugger winners were determined by coaches and
managers, who voted for the players they felt were the best offensive
producers at each position in both the American and National Leagues in 2005.
Selections were based on a combination of offensive statistics, including
batting average, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage, as well as the
coaches' and managers' general impressions of a player's overall offensive
value. Managers and coaches were not allowed to vote for players on their own
team.
The specially designed Silver Slugger Award will be presented to each player
by a representative of the Hillerich & Bradsby Co., makers of Louisville
Slugger, the Official Bat of Major League Baseball, in a ceremony early in
the 2006 season.
