Well, my offseason is just a couple of weeks old, and while my main goal is
to try to decompress from eight months of playing baseball, I find myself
quite busy.
Cynthia and I decided to stay in New York City for a couple of weeks, and had
a chance to enjoy being New Yorkers. We hit the stores, went out to eat,
played with Natasha, and visited with friends we hadn't seen much during the
year. We had a great time, and really got the chance to enjoy the city
without all the pressures of the baseball season. Even though we hated to
leave New York, we had to get home. So we packed up our stuff and headed to
Florida.
I was expecting to settle back into life in Miami, but Mother Nature had
another thing in mind. Just days after we got home, Hurricane Wilma slammed
into Florida.
Although Miami was spared a direct hit, the destruction was still pretty bad.
We lost power right away (and even after more than a week, it's still not
back on). A lot of the trees in our neighborhood were destroyed, and the
streets were filled with debris making driving an interesting experience. We
were lucky, though. My entire family is safe and sound, and most of the
damage to our home is minimal.
On Oct. 26, Cynthia and I traveled to Houston. Major League Baseball unveiled
the Latino Legends Team before Game 4 of the World Series. I was chosen as
the team's shortstop. To be honored with Juan Marichal, Fernando Valenzuela,
Rod Carew, Pedro Martinez, Pudge Rodriguez and Edgar Martinez (one of the
greatest teammates I ever had) was such a special experience. Roberto
Clemente's sons, Luis and Roberto Jr., represented their father. I think as
long as baseball is played, the spirit of Clemente will live inside each one
of us -- and to be put into the same group with such a great man was an
awesome feeling.
MLB hosted a reception for all the honorees. It was such a great reunion --
seeing the players' families and catching up with everyone. When we had some
free time, I wandered out onto the field, watched BP, did some interviews
with the media and caught up with some of the White Sox and Astros players.
Congratulations to the White Sox on their World Series championship. They
were the best team in baseball this year, and won with everything you need --
pitching, defense and timely hitting.
Watching them celebrate after winning it all automatically turned my thoughts
to my own team. I know we'll take the field in 2006 prepared and determined
to achieve what the White Sox did this season.
Although I am not in New York City anymore, I am keeping a close eye on what
is happening in the Bronx. I am thrilled to know that Joe Torre and Brian
Cashman will be returning. Both faced their toughest challenge last season --
taking our team -- which was floundering near last place -- to another
division title. Joe never allowed us to lose sight of the fact that the
regular season lasts six months, and that we could work our way to the top
one game at a time. He kept us focused on that goal.
Cash was under the gun all season. He was able to convince Mr. Steinbrenner
that drastic changes did not have to be made and that our core group was too
talented to be playing .500 baseball. He did not panic and make any
blockbuster deals at the trade deadline. He did make some smaller, more
subtle acquisitions that made the difference -- bringing in Aaron Small,
Shawn Chacon, Al Leiter, Matt Lawton, and calling up Robinson Cano and
Chien-Ming Wang. These moves definitely helped get us to October.
I'll keep you posted on what I'm doing in the offseason.
Take care and best to all of you,
Alex
