Arod's journal
April 28, 2006 http://0rz.net/a91hZ
Hey Fans:
Well, we're about twenty games into the season, it almost feels
like this is an extended Spring Training. Until this homestand, we only
played three games at Yankee Stadium. The team is getting into a rhythm,
though. We are playing almost every day, with lots of night games and lots
of travel days.I am a creature of habit (as are many of my teammates).
We are more comfortable when we can settle into our normal routine.
When you look at our record, I believe you do not see the true
makeup of this Yankee team. We haven't really begun to run on all cylinders.
If you follow the Yankees, I think you've seen flashes of brilliance from
everyone in our lineup -- our starting rotation, our deep bench, and our
bullpen. We just haven't been as consistent as we can be. We should probably
have at least three or four more "W's" in the win column, but that's baseball.
It's a long season, and a lot can happen in 162 games. I don't want to be
playing in September and looking back regretfully at games in April,
though.
As for me, a lot has been written the past week about how
hard I am on myself-- that I put too much pressure on myself to
succeed and that I am never satisfied with my performance. Well,
in many ways, this is true. I do expect a lot, however I don't
expect too much out of myself. I believe that we all have to be
leaders on this team, and we're all responsible for the outcome of
every game. So it's important for me to go out there every single day,
and take responsibility for what I have to do.
Next week will certainly be interesting as we head to Boston. This will be
the first time Johnny Damon returns to face his former team. Johnny has made
such an easy transition to our club. He's been a positive force in our
lineup, and in our clubhouse. Sometimes I almost forget he spent the last
four years in Boston. Personally, I think the Boston fans should stand up and
cheer for Johnny. He was such an important part of the Red Sox. Without him,
they would not have won the 2004 World Series. Still, I expect he'll hear a
lot of boos. I think it's because those fans are heartbroken that he's gone.
Oh yeah, and because he's a now a Yankee. That's all it takes.
Damon
While the fans and media will be making a big deal out of that, as a team, we
have to focus on our opponents and just play our game. Whether it's May 1 or
Oct. 1, there's always more adrenaline flowing when we play Boston. Right
now, we have to go up there and be consistent, and keep it going in Tampa and
in Texas.
Cynthia and I are thrilled to be back in New York City for the season. We
really missed the city over the winter, and have enjoyed getting back into
our routine here. New York City really has the most wonderful restaurants,
shopping and culture. We've been visiting all our favorite haunts, and
looking for new ones in our neighborhood. Now that Natasha is walking around,
we've become familiar with Central Park as well. She really loves to be
outdoors and she loves animals, so the park and the zoo are her favorite
places in the city. We're really looking forward to the longer homestands --
when we can spend some real quality time here as a family.
Before I close, I want to share one last thing that occurred this week. I was
presented with the 2005 American League MVP Award in front of the fans at
Yankee Stadium. I received the award at the baseball writer's dinner in
January already, but to receive it in front of the greatest fans in the world
was very special. During the ceremony, I was thinking of how the fans
welcomed and accepted me during my first two years here, and I was so proud
to be able to share the honor with them. Then I looked up at the facing of
the upper deck and saw the "26 World Championships" sign. I immediately began
to think how it would feel hoist a World Series trophy over my head instead.
I have dreamt of that day since I first played the game of baseball, and I
want the fans to know that this is my goal -- we'll bring a World Series
championship back to the Bronx yet. This is my commitment to myself, the team
and you.
Until next time, thanks for checking in.
