Working too hard
Torre: A-Rod's intensity can dull edge

BOSTON -- In Alex Rodriguez's ideal world, there would have been no rainout
last night at Fenway Park, just another game. "I like the routine," he said,
"of playing every day." However, some believe it could do him good to get
away and exhale.
Joe Torre watches Rodriguez struggling these days and the Yankees manager
openly wishes he wouldn't put so much pressure on himself. Or perhaps he
shouldn't watch so much video before each game. Maybe not take extra hitting
every single day.
"He works so hard all the time, as hard as anyone," Torre said, "but
sometimes I think he overdoes it, because if you think too much in this game,
you stop reacting to it."
Although Rodriguez never used the word "slump" last night, he clearly has not
been as productive a hitter recently as in the last two seasons. After going
7-for-36, his average is down to .261, with five homers and 16 RBIs. He has
only one extra-base hit since April 19, and has driven in only two runs in
the last seven games.
"One or two games," he said, "and you're right back in the mix of things."
Rodriguez has still found ways to be productive. He's reached base in 14
straight games. Although he is 0-for-9, he walked five times in that span,
and he points to that stretch as reason to believe he is inching close to
breaking out.
A-Rod
"Look, I walked twice [Monday], and walks are always a good sign for me,"
Rodriguez said. "The key is to swing at strikes, have good at-bats, and I
feel good."
A-Rod
Even if he hasn't looked comfortable at the plate; Torre said he looks
"anxious" and is "fighting himself." So he has spent significant time
watching video of himself.
"He's trying to see something mechanical, approach-wise," Torre said, "but I
think he's done it so often as far as swinging the bat that sometimes you get
in your own way."
Rodriguez, however, said he uses video to look at his pitch selection more
than anything else. He wants to get a hit so much sometimes he becomes too
aggressive. "Sometimes I get frustrated because I want to participate and
play, and hit versus just taking a walk, passing the baton and trusting the
guy behind you," he said.
In his mind, the only way to break out is by fighting, doing it by himself.
He goes to hitting coach Don Mattingly for guidance, to find out what he's
seen from afar, but he believes it's up to himself to do some damage when
he's given a pitch to hit.
His confidence has not wavered. When it was mentioned he is going back to
Texas this weekend, where he has hit well (.331 with 94 home runs in 1,073
at-bats), Rodriguez quickly dismissed that as a possible reason for an
upcoming breakout. He thinks that can happen at any time, in any stadium.
"I feel like anytime I go to the box, something good is going to happen,"
A-Rod said. "Whether I'm 20-for-20 or 0-for-20, I feel something good will
happen every time."
And the best thing to do is let the pitcher fear him and make his mistake
first.
"Obviously, when I come to the plate there is a fear I can hit a long ball. I
can do a lot of scary things, and I think that should work to my advantage,
not my disadvantage," Rodriguez said. "I've just got to be patient, and when
I get a good pitch to hit, don't miss it."
Rodriguez believes he made progress in that regard against Tim Wakefield
Monday night, when he worked a walk in two of three plate appearances against
him. "The knuckleball slowed me down a little, which was what I needed," he
said.
He was happy one walk led to a run. "Anytime I can be involved, you don't
need to hit a home run or a double, you can walk, hit behind the runner, you
can do all the little things," he said. "It's all going to add up for me at
the end of the year."
