Instead of letting him find his way out of a slump, the constant jeering of him will run him out of town when his contract is up. In fact, I do not think it's a stretch to label A-Rod as an "easy out" in big games. Not only does he not produce runs in those situations but his fielding in big games lacks confidence, and he either commits errors or misses plays that he routinely makes.
