Alex hears cheers
on three-hit night
BY JULIAN GARCIA
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER
In his first 2-1/2 seasons with the Yankees but especially this season, Alex
Rodriguez has been heavily criticized - and loudly booed - for his lack of
production while hitting with runners in scoring position.
So imagine how A-Rod must have felt when, with Derek Jeter on second base and
two outs in the second inning last night, he lined a single to left field.
Now imagine the feeling when Rodriguez rounded first and looked across the
diamond to see Jeter standing on third.
A-Rod
No RBI. No wild cheers from 54,025 fans at the Stadium. Actually, all of that
was no problem for A-Rod, who actually hit the ball too hard for Jeter to
even think about heading home.
Jeter
"With the way the hits have been coming this year, I'm not complaining about
any hits," Rodriguez said.
A-Rod
Rodriguez got his RBI two innings later, the go-ahead one, and finished with
three hits in five at-bats in a 6-5 win over the Marlins. The night was big
for him not only because he got two hits with runners in scoring position,
but just because he got hits - period.
A-Rod
Rodriguez went into the game with a .213 batting average in June. And that
includes a 6-for-16 streak over the previous five games. He's now batting
.287 with 15 home runs and 52 RBI.
Rodriguez knocked in that go-ahead run with a single in the fourth. He also
doubled in the eighth.
In the first, he came up with a chance to do some major damage. But with the
Yankees already up 1-0 and runners on second and third, he struck out looking
at a fastball right over the inner half of the plate. He was booed. Later,
when he allowed a weak grounder to get by him for a hit, he was booed again.
Rodriguez admitted that the hits he got later, especially the ones with
runners in scoring position, helped raise his spirits.
"Sure. It felt great," A-Rod said. "We've always said that (the fans) don't
hold grudges."
A week ago, hitting coach Don Mattingly held an "intervention" in Washington
after he noticed some mechanical flaws in A-Rod's swing. Since that time,
Rodriguez has been hitting the ball better.
Last night, he took a few more steps toward becoming the player everyone
expects him to be, and stopping the boos.
"Alex gets up there four or five times a game and you'd like it to be
wonderful all of the time," Joe Torre said. "But he had three good at-bats
tonight; the first at-bat wasn't so good. But hopefully we've got something
we can build on."
