[新聞] Torre to A-Rod: Learn from Reggie's arrogance
From: http://www.buffalonews.com/editorial/20060716/1002528.asp
PITTSBURGH - Alex Rodriguez is not Reggie Jackson and says you can't ask him
to be. Yankees manager Joe Torre did just that during a recent series in
Cleveland, saying that Rodriguez needed to show the kind of arrogance Mr.
October possessed if he wanted to tune out the boos that have hounded him in
the Bronx this year. A-Rod had a brutal June, batting just .213, and knows
he'll hear about his $252 million contract every day until he gets the
Yankees on the road back to the World Series.
"I've got to be who I am. I have to do it the way I've done it for the last
12 years," Rodriguez said last week during All-Star Media Day. "I'm not
Reggie Jackson and I have to do it my way. I've been having more fun in July
(batting .343 entering the weekend). It's been better to me and the team has
been playing better. I just want to keep doing what I'm doing the last two
weeks."
Teammate Derek Jeter was at the next table listening to the conversation,
rolling his eyes at the media's inquiries.
"It's more fun when you win, when you do well and contribute," Rodriguez
continued. "I've been doing that the last couple weeks. That wasn't happening
in June so it wasn't as much fun."
Chimed in Jeter: "Hey Alex, are you having fun now?"
Rodriguez offered a pained smile, the kind Yankee fans hate. They'd like to
see more Reggie-like fire and less of a CEO approach from Rodriguez, whom
they still haven't forgiven for his .133 batting average during the 2004 ALCS
choke against Boston or his key error in the decisive game of the division
series last year in Anaheim.
Rodriguez, who turns 31 on July 27, hit the break batting .282 with 19 homers
and 65 RBIs. But even another big season from him might not be enough as the
Yankees are in danger of missing the playoffs for the first time since 1993.
"I'm having a solid year but I know it can be better," Rodriguez said. "And I
know I'm going to be in the middle of controversy because I'm the
highest-paid player. I'm going to have that lightning-rod kind of effect but
I can't worry about it too much because all of that changes when you win.

You always knew. "But I, being poor, have only my dreams.
I have spread my dreams under your feet.
Tread softly because you tread on my dreams." I assume you dream, Preston.
