Cheers for Alex
BY JULIAN GARCIA
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER
Alex Rodriguez obviously would rather let his bat and his glove do the
talking. So for his sake, his bat and his glove better have something good to
say during the six-game home stand the Yankees started last night. If not,
some Yankee fans might have plenty to say to him.
So far, A-Rod is off to a good start. And so are the fans.
Rodriguez went 1-for-3 in the Yankees' 6-0 win over the Devil Rays at the
Stadium.
His first-inning single drove in a run; A-Rod was cheered as he walked to the
plate and the cheers grew as he rounded first base following the hit. He
walked in the second and came up with runners on first and second and one out
in the fourth. Fans were chanting "A-Rod! A-Rod!" during that at-bat, which
ended with a walk that helped fuel a two-run rally. He grounded out in the
sixth and struck out to end the eighth.
After the game, Rodriguez was asked how it felt to be cheered by the home
crowd.
"It felt great," he said.
Before the game, A-Rod said he was "looking forward" to playing at the
Stadium, despite the fact he has been booed there consistently this season,
either after making outs or following one of his 18 errors, more than any
other third baseman in the majors.
"I enjoy playing at home," A-Rod said, "even though some times are tougher
than others."
Joe Torre said Rodriguez seems to be "in a pretty good place" emotionally. He
also said he wasn't surprised to hear the cheers A-Rod received last night.
"(The fans) are certainly going to pick guys up when they're down," Torre
said.
Torre also thinks there's a good chance A-Rod will be booed again at home. It
all depends on his performance.
"They'll cheer him, and if he pops up they'll boo him," Torre said. "It's
their prerogative."
