08/02/2006 11:56 PM ET A-Rod goes for broke, cashes in Gamble pays off with "goofy" slide Peter Zellen http://tinyurl.com/lr2rw NEW YORK — Derek Jeter may be the one with the new fragrance, but it was A-Rod who came out smelling pretty good Wednesday night. Things have calmed down greatly for Alex Rodriguez of late. With the temperatures so high, he won't dare venture out into Central Park for another impromptu photo shoot. And with the Yankees finally back in first place — calm down it's August — fans don't dare want to screw with a good thing. The guy who was once the work in the Big Apple was getting some love Wednesday night. And as the Yankees piled on the Blue Jays for six runs in the sixth inning, it was Rodriguez at the center of it. Alex Rodriguez。 Well, technically he was at the beginning and end of it, but you'll get the idea. Rodriguez led off the inning hitting a ball cleanly to left; a ball hit hard enough and far enough that both A-Rod and first base coach Tony Pena thought he had a double easy. Only Toronto left fielder Frank Catalanotto pounced on it like his nickname — "Cat" — and fired into second. At first glance, Rodriguez was dead. Sliding early with the ball already in second baseman Aaron Hill's glove, this one was all but scored in the book — single, out trying to go to second. "In my mind I already had it so I was pretty confident, until I saw that I got beat by 25 feet," Rodriguez said. Only A-Rod, sliding with his left arm outstretched, pulled it in to avoid the tag, reaching around Hill with his right arm to touch the base. Great instinctive play or grand screw-up that worked out? Rodriguez made the admission quickly. "I don't know how I made it," he said. "They gave me a hard time coming in. You know you're in trouble; you feel like you come in without your homework and the teacher calls your name. I just got lucky, that was kind of a goofy slide anyway." But the sellout crowd at Yankee Stadium gave him credit for a great play. Heck, they won't know until Thursday morning. Several batters later, with the Yankees up 5-0, the Yankees' latest acquisition, right fielder Bobby Abreu, stood at the plate with the bases loaded and just one out. Defining moment for the new superstar? Not really, he struck out, yet still getting some supportive cheers from the fans. That brought up A-Rod, who stepped into the batter's box to the kind of crowd noise he hasn't heard since, well, last year. So with the fans at his back rather than on it, Rodriguez poked a ground ball just off the edge of diving shortstop John McDonald's glove for a single and two more Yankee runs — earning him an even louder ovation. ``He started the whole thing and he finished the whole thing," manager Joe Torre said. "Alex has had some good at-bats; he's made some good plays in the field. Everything feels pretty good right now." The feelings have been pretty good from the mound as well with Chien-Ming Wang, who threw eight more shutout innings Wednesday to extend his scoreless streak to 18 innings and win his fifth in a row for 13 so far this season. Even though Wang was cruising, Torre took him out before the ninth. Wang threw just 104 pitches but Torre didn't want that count getting any higher with temperatures in the high 90s. While Wang didn't say a word about it — he rarely says a word about anything — his competitiveness was clear to Torre when he saw Wang in the dugout later. "He didn't want to come out of the game. He walked by me and I said, 'What are you doing, quitting?'" Torre said. "He looked at me and pointed to Gator (pitching coach Ron Guidry) as if to say `He told me.' He's got a fire in his belly, there's no question about it." Peter Zellen is a New York-based sportswriter.
