Notes: A-Rod hopes his slide over
Third baseman has begun to make solid contact other way

NEW YORK -- Yankees fans recently have seen a couple of things from Alex
Rodriguez that they hadn't witnessed in quite some time.
First, he's hitting. Second, he's hitting to the opposite field.
Although Rodriguez was charged with a questionable error (No. 20 of the
season) on Saturday, his fielding miscue was forgotten in the scope of the
game, mostly because the Yankees won but also because his bat made up for it.
A-Rod went 2-for-3 with two opposite-field doubles Saturday and is now
9-for-18 over the past five games, with two homers and four RBIs. Rodriguez
also hit a solo homer to right field Friday against the Angels.
"I haven't been able to [hit the opposite way] all year, and it's been so
frustrating not to be able to do what I've always done," Rodriguez said. "I
don't want to talk about it too much. I just feel more comfortable."
Rodriguez said he hasn't really changed anything but has just focused on the
basics. He grounded into a double play Saturday, but said that was the
hardest he hit a ball all day.
"What I'm finding is that my outs are quality outs," he said. "They're not
weak outs, dribbling the ball or popping up."
While many hitters have problems hitting the ball the opposite way with
power, Rodriguez is strong enough to do so, manager Joe Torre said.
A-Rod had endured a 15-for-63 stretch (.238) from July 20 to Aug. 6. He also
was 1-for-16 in the four games leading up to the White Sox series, where his
hot hitting started.
Asked whether he thought his slide was behind him, Rodriguez said he hopes so
and repeated the mantra he cited throughout his struggles. This is baseball,
he says -- you're going to go through some slumps.
"It's day to day," he said. "Stats, you can't really worry about them.
They're going to be there."
As far as his season hitting statistics, A-Rod's are still among the best in
the league. He's hitting .287 with 24 homers and 82 RBIs. It's his highest
average since mid-July.
"Hopefully he goes on a little bit of a run, because he has the capabilities
of carrying a ballclub," Torre said.
