標題： Tough love in clubhouse for A-Rod By Sam Borden From: New York Daily News TORONTO — How does Alex Rodriguez fit into the Yankees' clubhouse? That's a question that has lingered over the Yanks all season, particularly during A-Rod's lengthy summer slump. It was raised again on Tuesday after a magazine article detailed how the Bombers took more of a "tough love" approach with Rodriguez last month, partially at the suggestion of Jason Giambi. He is quoted at length in an article about Rodriguez in this week's edition of Sports Illustrated, at one point telling Joe Torre that it was time to "stop coddling" Rodriguez and instead be straight with him about his struggles. "It wasn't a situation where there was malice or anything," Giambi said. "It was just trying to find anything to help him out. ... I don't want to make it sound like we were fighting or angry. We don't need a base hit to right field; we need a three-run homer." As Giambi spoke to reporters Tuesday, Rodriguez walked by and, somewhat awkwardly, asked jokingly, "What happened? Did you get traded?" Moments later, Rodriguez said firmly that he has felt "100 percent" supported by his teammates and added that it's "the most support I've ever gotten from any team. I couldn't be more proud. ... It's more support than I've ever had in all my years." " One criticism of Rodriguez that seems to crop up frequently — and is espoused by an anonymous teammate in the magazine piece — is that A-Rod's personality and movements come off as "scripted." Ultimately, however, the truth is that his reputation — and perception — will be mostly judged on what happens next month.
