Tough love in clubhouse for A-Rod By Sam Borden From: New York Daily News TORONTO — How does Alex Rodriguez fit into the Yankees' clubhouse? That's a question that has lingered over the Yanks all season, particularly during A-Rod's lengthy summer slump. It was raised again on Tuesday after a magazine article detailed how the Bombers took more of a "tough love" approach with Rodriguez last month, partially at the suggestion of Jason Giambi. Several hours before Tuesday night's game, Giambi made sure to say that his remarks were all meant constructively. He is quoted at length in an article about Rodriguez in this week's edition of Sports Illustrated, at one point telling Joe Torre that it was time to "stop coddling" Rodriguez and instead be straight with him about his struggles. "It wasn't a situation where there was malice or anything," Giambi said. "It was just trying to find anything to help him out. ... I don't want to make it sound like we were fighting or angry. By no means was it supposed to come off mean." Rodriguez said he did not recall specifics of his conversation with Giambi, which Giambi said took place during the Yanks' five-game sweep in Boston in August. Rodriguez had gotten a few hits but had not made an impact, and Giambi said he told him, "We need you to be the guy. We need you to hit the big three-run homer. We don't need a base hit to right field; we need a three-run homer." As Giambi spoke to reporters Tuesday, Rodriguez walked by and, somewhat awkwardly, asked jokingly, "What happened? Did you get traded?" Moments later, Rodriguez said firmly that he has felt "100 percent" supported by his teammates and added that it's "the most support I've ever gotten from any team. I couldn't be more proud. ... It's more support than I've ever had in all my years." 需要他可以敲三分全壘打的,我們不需要那種光是右外野的安打就好 ,我們需要三分全壘打啊~~』 As Giambi spoke to reporters Tuesday, Rodriguez walked by and, somewhat awkwardly, asked jokingly, "What happened? Did you get traded?" Moments later, Rodriguez said firmly that he has felt "100 percent" supported by his teammates and added that it's "the most support I've ever gotten from any team. I couldn't be more proud. ... It's more support than I've ever had in all my years." There is a dichotomy to Rodriguez, however, that can't be ignored. He seemed genuine when talking about his teammates yet also seemed defensive at times in the magazine article and made remarks that could be seen as digs. "(Mike) Mussina doesn't get hammered at all," he is quoted as saying. "He's making a boatload of money. Giambi's making ($20.4 million), which is fine and dandy, but it seems those guys get a pass. When people write (bad things) about me, I don't know if it's (because) I'm good-looking, I'm biracial, I make the most money, I play on the most popular team. ... " One criticism of Rodriguez that seems to crop up frequently — and is espoused by an anonymous teammate in the magazine piece — is that A-Rod's personality and movements come off as "scripted." Ultimately, however, the truth is that his reputation — and perception — will be mostly judged on what happens next month.
