A-Rod must deliver to stop the criticism
A-Rod must deliver to stop the criticism
Watch Alex Rodriguez, the most gifted player of his generation, one of the
most gifted players ever.
Watch him fidget in the batter's box and stretch his neck and tug at his
batting gloves — he looks like he is literally uncomfortable in his own
skin.
Watch A-Rod. This postseason means more to him than to any other name player
in the game.
看看 A ROD。
For all his talent, Rodriguez is dogged by nasty insinuations: He is a
choker. He is a selfish player. He can't handle New York. He is insecure. He
desperately needs to be liked. He is a stats freak.
The last three are indisputable. (If you have any questions, read Tom
Verducci's outstanding recent Sports Illustrated story on Rodriguez.)
As for the other labels ... well, A-Rod gets a bad rap largely because of how
good he has been. We expect him to be Hank Aaron at the plate and still play
a stellar third base. I know this isn't the cool thing to do these days, but
let's take a brief moment to appreciate just how good A-Rod has been.
In his career, Rodriguez has more than 460 home runs and 1,300 RBIs. The idea
that somebody might accumulate such gaudy stats by the age of 31, while
playing the left side of the infield his entire career, is truly astounding.
Look at the stats, and you start to realize that by the time he retires, Alex
Rodriguez could become the most prodigious hitter in history.
At this writing, near the end of one of the worst seasons of his career,
Rodriguez has 165 hits, 34 home runs and 119 RBIs. If he plays the rest of
his career at that pace, and plays until age 40, he would retire as the
all-time leader in home runs and RBIs — and would be sixth in base hits.
Nobody knows if Rodriguez will stay healthy and productive until age 40. But
remember: that stat projection assumes he keeps producing at his "lousy" 2006
rate.
If you look at Rodriguez's stats and think, "Man, what else does this guy
have to do to have the world fawning all over him," ... well,
congratulations! You have something in common with Alex Rodriguez.
He really does seem to think that as long as his numbers are good, all is
right in the world. Jason Giambi came down hard on him for that, according to
Sports Illustrated, and this should tell you how poorly A-Rod is viewed these
days: Giambi, who built his career with steroids, can rip him with very few
repercussions.
Rodriguez's denial, coupled with his infamous baby-slap at Bronson Arroyo's
glove two years ago and 2-for-15 performance against the Angels last year has
led many people to conclude he is a choker. If you tell people that Alex
Rodriguez is a regular-season creation who can't hack it in October, you
won't get much argzqzqument
