NEW ROCHELLE
Mariano Rivera has a message for Yankee fans: Alex Rodriguez is staying
and you should support him.
"This guy, he's a great player,'' Rivera said last night during
an appearance at his restaurant, Mo's New York Grill. "We're a better
team with him. I hear people say we should trade him and I don't agree."
Rodriguez has said he wants to remain with the Yankees, and general
manager Brian Cashman insists he has no desire to trade him. But after
another sub-par postseason, the question of whether Rodriguez is
a good fit has come up again.
No athlete in New York generates such fervent debate.
"I don't think we lost because of Alex,'' Rivera said. "We lost, period.
The fans, everybody, they should be with him."
Rivera, who turns 37 at the end of the month, has become an active partner
in the restaurant. But he has no plans to leave baseball, saying he hopes
to pitch in the new Yankee Stadium in 2009. His contract expires after the
coming season.
"I want to talk to them about another contract," Rivera said. "Maybe two
more years. Hopefully we can do it soon, maybe before the season."
Rivera missed nearly a month at the end of the season with what the Yankees
said was a forearm strain. He said a postseason checkup revealed no problems
and he will start his throwing program as scheduled in January.
"I'm fine," Rivera said. "They took some pictures of my elbow and it's good."
Rivera is also relieved the Yankees decided to keep Joe Torre as manager
after the playoff upset against the Tigers.
"I was worried for a few days because that would have been wrong," he said.
"I was like everybody else, waiting to see what would happen.''
Notes: Shortstop Derek Jeter won his third consecutive Gold Glove. He
committed 15 errors in 1,292 1/3 innings. "I am very proud of Derek,"
owner George Steinbrenner said in a statement. "I hope he wins MVP.
He should.'' Said Jeter: "The Gold Glove Award means a great deal to me.
Fielding doesn't get many headlines, but it's a big part of the game of
baseball. I take great pride in my defense."...Teams have until Wednesday
to submit a bid to gain the rights of Japanese right-hander Daisuke Matsuzaka.
His team, the Seibu Lions, will have until Nov. 14 to accept or reject
the highest offer. With several teams pulling out, the Yankees, Mets and
Red Sox appear to be the main competitors.

MO for Captain, and Jeter for MVP! :P
