I would like it if you could teach me some baseball and help me get
a shot at being the next ARod.
-- Noel Q., Stratford, Conn.
Alex: Noel, Thanks for the kind message. The best thing I can tell
you about baseball is to have fun and work hard at the fundamentals
-- hit off a tee to perfect your swing and take hundreds of ground
balls, fly balls, etc. over and over again. Good luck.
How are you liking fatherhood? And is it hard for you to concentrate
on your job and the game now that you're a daddy?
-- Cinny W., Seattle
Alex: Not at all Cinny. When I am working, I can totally focus on
my job, but I love being a father, and I spend every possible second
with Natasha and Cynthia. I am very blessed.
Do you like playing third base over shortstop? And if you ever have a
bad slump, how do you get out of it?
-- Edison R., New York City
Alex: Edison, I work very hard to get the most of the talent God
blessed me with. I have adjusted to playing third base and love it.
Slumps are part of the game. I just have to remember what has made me
successful, and in time, the hits will come again. Thanks for writing.
I am 9 years old and love baseball. I think you and Derek Jeter are
the greatest players. Are you and Derek really good friends?
-- Dean J., Nova Scotia
Alex: Derek and I have been good friends for 10 years, and I love
playing right next to him every night. We always hoped we would be
teammates one day.
Do you have any tips on batting, fielding and maybe pitching?
-- Jan R., Orlando, Fla.
Alex: Fundamentals -- practice, practice, practice. Use a tee to work
on your swing, take hundreds of ground balls and fly balls. I am not
a pitcher, but the key is to throw strikes no matter how fast or slow
you throw. Biggest tip: Have fun and enjoy playing and practicing.
Would you please tell me the name of your at-bat music? It's been in
my head and it's driving me crazy!
-- Barbara B., New York City
Alex: The song is "Numb (Encore)" by Linkin Park with my friend
Jay-Z on it -- that's why I picked it.
How do you handle it when things aren't going your way?
-- Heather M., Providence R.I.
Alex: I have always tried not to get too high during the good times,
and too low during the rough times. I feel you need to be on an even
keel -- that is how you get through life.
How can a player hit a curveball without striking out?
-- Alesia H., Detroit
Alex: Alesia, baseball is a guessing game. You anticipate what pitch
is coming, but need to react. First you need to practice hitting
curves during batting practice -- some batting cages or machines have
them -- so you recognize the rotation and movement of the pitch. The
key to hitting a curve is to wait on the ball as long as you can and
try to make good contact. But you are going to strike out -- I do.
It's OK. Best of luck.
If you were a pitcher in Game 7 of the World Series and the game was
tied, who would you least want to face?
-- Jose O., New York City
Alex: Jose, good question. Hands down -- I would not want to face
Barry Bonds.
Do you enjoy vacationing in Florida for part of the year?
-- Marcus T., Sarasota, Fla.
Alex: Hi Marcus, thanks for writing. Growing up in Miami, I make it my
offseason home. Sometimes I will spend time in other parts of the
state. Sarasota, where you live, is a beautiful area.
I'm 17 years old and I was wondering, do I even have a single shot at
playing professional baseball? I love the game so much, I know
everything about it, I just wish I had someone to teach me and to
guide me.
-- Matias L., Bronx
Alex: Matias, thanks for writing. Having never seen you play, I can't
say what chance you have of playing pro ball, but what is important to
remember is if you really want something, then you have to go for it.
This way, you will never have regrets that you did not try. Being a
Major League player is a million to one shot -- so most do not make it.
If you love baseball and enjoy following the game, maybe you can
pursue a career that will bring you closer to the game, like working
for a team in somecapacity. I wish you success in all you do.
DON'T GIVE UP!
What are your favorite computer games?
-- Trey Z., Villa Hills, Ky.
Alex: Trey, I really do not have any favorite computer games -- I do
not get a chance to play. I am too busy chasing my daughter.
I want to become a great hitter for high school and possibly college
baseball. I can practice my defense at home by bouncing a tennis ball
off of my chimney in my lawn but cannot practice my hitting skills
with a real ball and live pitching. The next batting cage is too far
away to practice regularly. Is there a way that you found helpful to
help you with your hitting?
-- John S., Lee, Mass.
Alex: John, I believe in working off a tee. I use a tee every single
day, and will hit off a tee for weeks before I even see live pitching.
Focus on your mechanics and making solid contact off the bat. Look at
this video clip. I did "Pitch Hit and Run" in 2003 with Jennie Finch
and it demonstrates what I mean.
