- Does Alex Rodriguez take solace that the athlete he has been most compared to
– Peyton Manning – just shucked the notion that he could never win the Big
One? Given enough chances in the playoffs – like Manning and John Elway before
him – something incredible would probably happen for a player as talented as
A-Rod. But is time still on his side as a Yankee?
Rodriguez has the ability to opt-out of his contract after this season and make
himself a free agent. If he goes through another year of being unable to fully
cope with outsized expectations and amid a soap opera that rotates around him,
Rodriguez very well may decide that he needs to salvage his career and sanity
by going to a less-pressurized locale. Spring training is the first chance in
2007 to see if Rodriguez has grown any more comfortable in his skin, if he can
co-exist better with Derek Jeter and if he has any lingering animus toward Joe
Torre for dropping and dropping him in last year’s postseason lineup.
