Welcome back to another exciting edition of the Courant's Yankee Blog, (CYB),
where blogging won't hurt any more. It's an open smile on a friendly shore.
.... Your host, Dom Amore, checking back in from the Metrodome, where the big
snowstorm expected tonight won't affect this indoor series. Big topic in Joe
Torre's pregame jam session was, natch, Alex Rodriguez and his historic start
to the season.
"Alex is just in good place right now," Torre said. "It's a lot of fun for us
to watch him."
Rodriguez is not only in a good "mental" place, but a good physical spot,
hitting behind Johnny Damon, Derek Jeter and especially Bobby Abreu in the
Yankees lineup. "You get to see about 30 pitches every night before you even
get up there," said Rodriguez, who is the first Yankee to hit five home runs
in the first six games. "Now, what's the record for the first seven games?"
Torre wanted to know. You can bet Elias Sports Bureau is on it.
Biggest thing CYB sees from Rodriguez is the way he's spreading the ball
around. HIs last four homers have been to straight-away left, dead-center,
right-center and straight-away right. That's the way he hit in Texas, and one
of the reasons he seemed a good fit for the Yankees. But somewhere along the
line, Rodriguez lost that hit--where-it's-pitched approach and starting
trying to pull everything, playing into pitchers' hands, especially in the
clutch, when they'd offer nothing to pull.
"When you look up the middle and to the opposite field," Torre said, "you're
not as apt to be fooled, because you're seeing the ball a split-second
longer. Right now, it looks like Alex doesn't care what they throw him. He
just looks comfortable."
Rodriguez obviously had some really hot stretches during his MVP year in
2005, but they were somehow lost in the flow of that season. This hot streak,
coming right from the start of a season, looks like something different.
Talk to you again about the fifth inning.
