A-ROD MAY BREAK NOW

July 5, 2007 -- Joe Torre said Alex Rodriguez's left hamstring is good
enough to play third base today against the Twins. After chatting with
Rodriguez this morning, the Yankees manager may learn he might not have
his most productive hitter for all four games leading to the All-Star
break that starts Monday.
"I am going to sleep on it and talk to Joe to see what's best for the
team," Rodriguez said after going 0-for-4 as the DH in yesterday's 6-2
loss to the Twins. "We have to be smart about it. The worst thing we can
do is [play] and make it worse. When you are playing through it, it
doesn't get better."
Asked if he wouldn't be able to play in Tuesday's All-Star Game, the
majors' leading vote getter said, "I don't know. I am more concerned
with the four games going into the break and playing in as many as I can."
Earlier in the day, Rodriguez wasn't optimistic about playing in San
Francisco on Tuesday.
"If I feel like this, probably not," said Rodriguez, who will attend the
All-Star Game if he can't participate.
Rodriguez said he feels tightness when he finishes his swing but not on
the field. Though he said the injury, which he suffered running the bases
Monday night, isn't affecting him at the plate, he is hitless in eight
at-bats since getting hurt. He was 0-for-11 when he got hurt.
Even before Rodriguez was injured, Torre said he planned on using him as
the DH yesterday against Johan Santana.

The Tigers and Indians are battling for first place in the AL Central and
for right-handed reliever Eric Gagne, who would be a welcome addition to
the Yankees' bullpen if they were willing to sacrifice the young pitching
the Rangers want. Gagne was 2-0 with 10 saves and appears to be recovered
from elbow and back surgeries in 2005 and 2006.
Because GM Brian Cashman has been reluctant to talk about including
minor-league pitchers Ian Kennedy and Joba Chamberlain in a trade - Phil
Hughes is untouchable at all costs - the Yankees likely don't have what it
will take to get Gagne, in whom the Tigers are very interested.
As hard as it is to believe, an NL talent evaluator predicted there will
be a market for Kyle Farnsworth if the Yankees are willing to swallow a
piece of the $8.13 million remaining on Farnsworth's contract for this year
and next.
Farnsworth worked an inning yesterday. In 35 games this season, Farnsworth
has pitched 321/3 innings and given up 37 hits, 16 walks and hit a batter.
That's more than 1? runners allowed per inning.

Frank Torre appeared at Yankee Stadium yesterday for the first time since
undergoing a kidney transplant in mid-May. "He looks pretty good," Joe
Torre said. "He gets tired. They are letting him go home (to Florida) at
the end of the month."
