There were no fireworks to enjoy from the Yankees in yesterday's
listless 6-2 loss at the Stadium, but if you listened closely enough,
you could hear the sound of an alarm bell coming from the vicinity of
Alex Rodriguez's locker.
The All-Star third baseman, hobbled by a hamstring injury he suffered on
Monday night, said after the loss to the Twins that he wasn't sure if
he'd be able to play today. He also wouldn't rule out a trip to the
disabled list.
"Anything is a possibility right now," said Rodriguez, who hasn't been on
the DL since 2000. "Hopefully that's not something we'll look at."
If it is, it will be news to Joe Torre.
After the game, the Yankees manager indicated that Rodriguez would start
at third base today in the Yanks' series finale against Minnesota,
saying, "I think so, yeah."
Less than 30 minutes later, A-Rod said he planned to have a conversation
with the manager today to figure out whether sitting out a game or two -
or even four - would be best for the team.
"I'm going to have to sit down with Joe and evaluate what we want to do
here coming into the break," Rodriguez said. "I just want to be smart and
have some precaution with it."
Torre had a similar apparent communication breakdown with reliever Kyle
Farnsworth earlier this week. The skipper told reporters that the reliever
was unavailable with a bad back on Sunday and questionable for Monday
night. Farnsworth refuted that claim, saying he's been healthy "all year."
Rodriguez has played in all 81 of the Yankees' games this season, which
is no surprise given his history. A-Rod has appeared in at least 154
games in every season since 2001, topping the 160 mark in four of those
six seasons.
Rodriguez wouldn't discuss how the injury is affecting his play, saying:
"That's not important. It's frustrating. I want it to get better. We'll
see what happens."
For him to consider sitting down, however, indicates that the injury
might be worse than he thought, but he declined to get into many specifics.
Rodriguez, who is mired in an 0-for-19 slump, said the strained left
hamstring he suffered Monday night bothered him "some" during yesterday's
game.
Moments later, however, A-Rod backed off that statement, saying his
struggles at the plate had little to do with the injury. "When I'm bad,
I'm bad," he said.
A-Rod started at third base on Tuesday night, going 0-for-4. He went
0-for-4 again yesterday, this time as the designated hitter.
Rodriguez's health clouds his status for Tuesday's All-Star Game. A-Rod -
the AL's starting third baseman and the game's leading vote-getter - said
he won't decide whether to play in the Midsummer Classic until Saturday,
and that if he feels the way he does right now, he'll skip the game.
Regardless, because he was elected by the fans, he would be required to
go to San Francisco for the event.
"If he feels he needs (the rest during the break), then it's certainly a
good idea," Torre said. "I know he's honored with the selection, but the
most important thing is the second half of the year for us and how he
feels. It's his decision."
The Yankees, who had four hits yesterday, can't afford to be without the
two-time MVP for long. Yesterday's loss dropped them 12 games behind the
Red Sox in the AL East and ensured that they wouldn't make up any more
ground yesterday in the wild card race.
The Yankees carried a 2-1 lead into the sixth, when Mike Mussina (4-6)
gave up the tying run. In the seventh, Torii Hunter drilled Mussina's
2-1 pitch to center for a leadoff double, putting the go-ahead run in
scoring position. Jason Kubel pulled Mussina's next pitch down the
right-field line to put the Twins ahead, 4-2. Brian Bruney allowed a
two-run homer to Luis Rodriguez in the ninth.
At 39-42, the Yankees have four games left before the All-Star break.
Unless they manage to win all four, they will go into the break with a
losing record for the first time since 1995, when they were 30-36 in the
strike-shortened season.
How they finish the first half could depend largely on the status of
their third baseman, although it appears that not even he can say what
that is.
"When you're playing through it, it's not going to improve," Rodriguez
said. "The one thing you don't want to do is keep going out there,
getting it worse going into the break and doing something that's not
going to be helpful for the team."
