Bonds: A-Rod will be eventual home-run king
BY KEN DAVIDOFF
SAN FRANCISCO -- For once, Alex Rodriguez found himself surrounded by media,
answering questions about ... praise.
"I kind of feel shy talking about it," the Yankees third baseman said at
yesterday's All-Star Game player availability session.
Barry Bonds, the future home run king, anointed A-Rod as the man who someday
will own that exalted record. And the controversial Giants slugger showered
Rodriguez with public compliments.
"His talent is unbelievable," Bonds said. "I don't think people really
appreciate his talent ... His eye-hand coordination, his actual strength, his
actual recognition of the ball -- those are things you can't teach. A lot of
us have it that are at that level. Some of us can do it better than others,
and he's one of them."
Continued Bonds: "It's weird, because I know what he knows, and I can see
what he sees. I'm just older and can't do it as often. Willie [Mays, Bonds'
godfather] told me, 'I see what you see. I just can't do it anymore.' It's
like with A-Rod. I see what you see, and I know what you're thinking. I just
can't do those things as often as you can."
Said Rodriguez: "I hit [14] home runs in April, and they said I was going to
hit 140. I've disappointed there. When you're 250 or 400 home runs away, 300,
whatever it is [Rodriguez trails Bonds 751-494], I think it's kind of
ridiculous. I take that as a compliment, but it's his time. It should all be
about him."
Bonds drew the largest media crowd, by far, and A-Rod placed a distant
second. In addition to the love from Bonds, Rodriguez addressed his current
health and his potential future.
A-Rod strained his left hamstring a week ago last night, and the ailment
bothered him enough that he sat out the Yankees' July 5 game. Yet he played
well against the Angels over the weekend, convincing him to play in tonight's
Midsummer Classic. Rodriguez could get as many as three at-bats.
"It was a bit difficult," Rodriguez said of his decision. "But I thought,
after playing three or four days, I told Joe [Torre] that I was going to give
him an indication of how I felt. I talked to him and Cash [Brian Cashman],
and they both put it on me. Over the weekend, I felt good enough. I thought
it was important for me to play."
"I'll play it by ear and pretty much get a feel from A-Rod," American League
manager Jim Leyland said. "You know, I know that he wants to play, and I
certainly appreciate that. But I'll be careful with everybody's players and
everybody's pitchers, and I certainly will not do anything foolish."
Rodriguez's 30 homers and 86 RBIs lead all of baseball. "He's having a lot of
fun playing the game that he likes," Jorge Posada said of his teammate. "He's
showing how good he is. He's proven he's probably the best player in baseball
right now."
He's likely to be the best free agent in baseball this offseason, when he has
the opportunity to opt out of his 10-year, $252-million contract. Not
surprisingly, A-Rod didn't offer much to questions about that issue,
insisting that he was thinking only about the season's second half.
You could see Rodriguez's hesitancy, moreover, when a reporter asked him
about playing in next year's All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium, honoring the
scheduled final season of The House That Ruth Built.
"Yankee Stadium, that's definitely going to be sentimental," Rodriguez said.
"It's definitely one of a kind. Hopefully, I'm there, and I look forward to
being there."
But he'd rather answer questions about his future home run total than his
future employer.
