Yanks riding A-Rod's charmed season
Frustrations behind, star setting blistering pace in pennant race
By Bryan Hoch / MLB.com
NEW YORK -- As Alex Rodriguez's acting skills go, it's a good thing he's an
excellent hitter.
At least, that seems to be the general opinion of the Yankees bullpen. During
New York's three-game sweep of the Royals at Kauffman Stadium this weekend,
during which Rodriguez blasted four home runs to continue a stellar
September, the relievers busied themselves by saluting each A-Rod shot with
shoulder rolls, feigning agony as they loosened rotator cuffs in unison.
"I've never seen 24 guys, collectively -- even with the coaching staff --
make fun of one guy," Rodriguez said. "We're having a lot of fun with that."
The trickle amounts of medical information that the Yankees permit to become
public indicate that Rodriguez is playing hurt; first, with a jammed left
shoulder incurred on an ill-advised headfirst dive, and second, with a
sprained and bruised right ankle that prompted team doctors to recently order
Rodriguez out of Yankee Stadium two hours before game time for an MRI exam.
If he's suffering, you'd never be able to tell. Continuing what he has called
a "magical season," Rodriguez sprang out of that MRI tube and raced back up
to the Bronx last week, homering twice in an inning to set the tone for his
final month, then continued his frenzy on the Yankees' final trip outside the
AL East.
At what point do pitchers simply stop pitching to Rodriguez, particularly
with Hideki Matsui in a 2-for-27 tailspin? Including the performances at
Kansas City, Rodriguez has homered in five consecutive games, has driven in
140 runs and has Roger Maris' single-season Yankees home run record of 61 in
sight, needing nine more with 19 games left to play.
"He is really having a good time," said Yankees manager Joe Torre. "Who
wouldn't, with that kind of talent?"
For the answer, one needs only to turn the clock back 12 months or so. The
answer, as resoundingly true then as it is positively false now, was
Rodriguez himself -- mired in a storm of confusion and controversy --
flailing at pitches he should have crushed, A-Rod's two Most Valuable Player
Awards appearing as distant as his exploits firing passes to tight end Doug
Mientkiewicz on sun-scorched Florida high school gridirons.
Five hundred-nineteen at-bats later and already having joined Babe Ruth,
Mickey Mantle and Maris as the only Yankees players to hit 50 or more home
runs in a single season (Rodriguez is the only right-handed hitter among
them), he still has not revealed just what clicked over the winter. As
close-lipped as he has been in New York, Rodriguez may never fully divulge
those secrets.
"It's not finished yet, but it certainly stacks up there as probably my best,
just because it's in the middle of a pennant race."
-- Alex Rodriguez,on his season
"還沒結束"
But somehow, Rodriguez has put 2006 and all of its frustrations -- including
a 1-for-14 showing in the AL Division Series against Detroit that Rodriguez
has called the most embarrassing moments of his career -- behind him.
Rodriguez completed April in a frenzy, tying a Major League record with 14
home runs in that month, then caught fire again in June, batting .402 while
driving in 34 runs as he secured the top vote totals for the All-Star Game in
San Francisco. A left hamstring injury briefly put his Midsummer Classic
appearance in doubt, but much like the more recent injuries down the stretch,
Rodriguez ignored the impediments and plowed through.
It would be unfair to characterize Rodriguez as a one-man show -- Jorge
Posada is hitting .336, Chien-Ming Wang has 18 victories and Derek Jeter is
third in the AL with 179 hits. But another hot month, like Rodriguez's April,
May or his .330 August, could be enough for the Yankees to jump on A-Rod's
back and ride all the way to the postseason.
With eight home runs and 15 RBIs in eight September games, compiling a .533
batting average through 35 at-bats, Rodriguez's September has all the
earmarks of an October red carpet. The Yankees -- two games under .500 on
July 9; now a season-high 19 games over -- entered Monday's off-day with a
four-game lead over the Tigers and a five-game advantage over the Mariners
for the AL Wild Card.
"If you told us that two months ago, it would have seemed like we won the
lottery," Rodriguez said. "We were so far behind, but now we're in a good
place. We control our own destiny."
"兩個月前就像中了彩卷,我們本來離很遠,但現在我們卡好位"阿肉說。
When considering Rodriguez's season, let's not forget that Gary Sheffield, of
all people, hit the nail on the head first -- before Rodriguez's torrid
"remember-me?" April, before the 21 "clutch" homers to tie games or give the
Yankees the lead, before A-Rod was leading the American League in home runs,
RBIs, runs scored and curtain calls.
It was a sunny Monday morning at Legends Field in Tampa, and Sheffield had
the visiting clubhouse all to himself, the first member of the Detroit Tigers
to arrive, his personal vehicle whizzing past aromatic orange groves and
Cracker Barrel signage well ahead of the team bus.
With that sort of stage all to himself, Sheffield did not disappoint. Still
smarting over his own departure from pinstripes, Sheffield looked down the
state at the controversies already simmering in Yankees camp -- most
recently, A-Rod's unexpected proclamation that he and Jeter were no longer
"blood brothers" and not as close as they used to be.
This, Sheffield said, would be just what Rodriguez needed.
"He really wanted to say these things a long time ago," Sheffield said, "but
Alex is just a passive guy in that area. He didn't want to touch that
subject. That could be borderline controversial. He did it, and I think he's
going to benefit from it. I talked to Alex about it all the time. He's got to
be his own man."
And that seemed to be part of the "good place" -- a term he has used numerous
times -- Rodriguez has felt since reporting to Tampa. Indeed, A-Rod, the
Lonely Yankee -- as a 2006 Sports Illustrated feature dubbed him -- is no
more. Whether it's the relievers' shoulder-rolling or celebratory dugout
dances with Robinson Cano and Melky Cabrera, A-Rod seems to fit.
"My teammates have had a lot to do with my success this year," Rodriguez
said. "You take a guy like [Andy] Pettitte and Roger [Clemens], guys you talk
to that are new guys coming in with different perspectives. They're winners
and have been there before. Then, obviously, the new guys -- all of them. All
the young guys just bring an energy; just not only to me, but I think to
other veterans on this team."
A sure bet to be this season's AL Most Valuable Player, Rodriguez has said
that he refuses to stop and admire the statistical achievements whizzing past
his season, preferring -- at least outwardly -- to focus on the Yankees'
pursuit of the playoffs and of a World Series ring that has proved elusive in
his previous three New York campaigns.
"It's not finished yet, but it certainly stacks up there as probably my best,
just because it's in the middle of a pennant race," Rodriguez said.
But the names have been breathtaking, fresh out of the rarified air of the
baseball encyclopedia -- with 516 career home runs, Rodriguez has shot past
Mel Ott, Eddie Mathews and Ernie Banks, all in the last week. Ted Williams
and Willie McCovey are five good swings away. His 50 home runs as a third
baseman have set a new Major League record, shattering old marks held by Mike
Schmidt and Adrian Beltre.
"His whole career is something special -- the numbers he's put up at his age,
and how he takes care of himself," Torre said. "Sometimes how important this
game is to him gets in the way, because he needs to do so much. This year
he's been a gamer."
