Now he is putting together one of the great seasons in the Yankees' storied history. First baseman Doug Mientkiewicz, a high school teammate of Rodriguez's, saw this coming when the two of them took practice grounders over the winter in Miami. "He had a scowl," Mientkiewicz says. "He wanted to prove a lot of people wrong." Rodriguez has left bruises on outfield walls and pitchers' egos from the Bronx to the Bay Area. It's all part of a landmark year that has Rodriguez -- who can become a free agent at the end of this season -- leading the majors in home runs, RBI, runs and slugging percentage. Baseball has seen seasons similar to A-Rod's in recent years from players such as David Ortiz, Albert Pujols and Barry Bonds, but there hasn't been a pinstriped slugger putting up numbers like these in decades. "It's probably the best one put up by a Yankee player in the last 30 years," says Baseball Hall of Fame researcher Freddy Berowski. "People have been talking about Alex Rodriguez as one of the greatest of his generation for years. This could possibly be his best season -- and he's still relatively young." Mientkiewicz, who has known the 32-year-old Rodriguez longer than anybody with the Yankees, marvels at what he has done. "The game's not that easy," Mientkiewicz said. "He's a machine.
