[新聞] Cashman confirms: If A-Rod opts out, he's done as Yankee

Although no decision was made regarding Joe Torre's future during the second
day of the Yankees' organizational meetings, it appears that the group of
front-office execs was able to agree on something.
If Alex Rodriguez opts out, his time in pinstripes will be over.
Echoing a position he has stated before, general manager Brian Cashman
reiterated the club's stance that should the third baseman opt out of his
contract, the Yankees would bid the two-time MVP farewell and let him sign
elsewhere without a fight.
"I can reaffirm that if Alex Rodriguez opts out of his contract, that we will
not participate in his free agency," Cashman said after the second day of
meetings concluded. "That is accurate and that is definitive."
Rodriguez has three years and $81million remaining on the record 10-year,
$252 million deal he signed with the Texas Rangers before the 2001 season.
But a clause in the contract allows him to scrap the final three years and
become a free agent, a move clearly being endorsed by his agent, Scott Boras.
The Yankees have more than $20million coming to them from the Rangers if A-Rod
fulfills his current contract, part of the trade that brought the superstar to
New York in February of 2004. If he opts out of the deal, the Yankees would
forfeit that subsidy from Texas, making it more cost prohibitive to sign the
third baseman.
A-Rod and his wife, Cynthia, spent the past few days at Boras' home in Newport
Beach, Calif., as they went over all of the information Rodriguez would need to
make his decision. A-Rod has until the 10th day following the World Series to
opt out.
When asked during a television interview yesterday if he believes the Yankees
would stick to their word and not pursue Rodriguez as a free agent, Boras
didn't seem to be overly concerned.
"I think you have to look at what each party has the right to do, and
certainly, an employer has the right to choose or not to choose to bid on an
employee," Boras said on CNBC. "In Alex's case, when he was acquired from
Texas, his contract had four years to run and the Yankees were fully aware that
he had the right to opt out. Alex enjoys playing in New York and has said so,
and I think both parties are fully aware of the rights of one another."
The Yankees likely will offer A-Rod a hefty contract extension that would kick
in after his current deal expires in 2010, when Texas' financial commitment
would be finished.
Should Rodriguez opt out and the Yankees decide not to pursue him, it will be
interesting to see which teams can - or will - give A-Rod the kind of money
Boras is looking for. The agent has hinted that his client will be looking for
a 10-year deal in the $300 million-$350 million range, a figure most teams
likely would shy away from.
After hitting .314 with 54 home runs and 156 RBI this season, A-Rod is expected
to pick up his third career AL MVP award next month. Should the Yankees let him
go, replacing his production at third base would be virtually impossible, as
the Bombers would be forced to either make a run at Boston's Mike Lowell - the
only other prominent free agent third baseman - or try to trade for a player
such as Florida's Miguel Cabrera.
