Questions surrounding Bombers leave Rodriguez unsettled
By Bryan Hoch / MLB.com
NEW YORK -- Unsettled issues in the Yankees' universe may play into Alex
Rodriguez's decision whether to opt out or not, agent Scott Boras said in a
published report.
Boras told CNNMoney.com that Rodriguez could be challenged to reach an
agreement with the Yankees by the time he needs to decide if he will be
triggering his opt-out, which must be done by 10 days after the conclusion of
the World Series.
On Thursday, the Yankees, who have catcher Jorge Posada and closer Mariano
Rivera remaining as their key free agents, watched manager Joe Torre reject a
one-year, $5 million contract with performance-based incentives.
Posada and Rivera have sent smoke signals that they could test the open
market. In addition, left-hander Andy Pettitte is also mulling a $16 million
player option for 2008, and the Yankees have not yet decided if they will
bring back right fielder Bobby Abreu with a $16 million club option.
"I would say that state of flux is a grand issue," Boras said in the CNNMoney
story. "I'm not saying that information and time can not resolve it. But it's
going to take time for us to know how these things are resolved. We're
talking about a long-term contract here, and to make that decision is
difficult, knowing there are that many issues up in the air."
With Torre's successful 12-year run in pinstripes having come to an end, the
Yankees plan to begin their interview process for their managerial search
next week.
Bench coach Don Mattingly said through his agent, Ray Schulte, that he has
interest in the position and will travel to Tampa, Fla., sometime mid-week to
meet with club executives.
General manager Brian Cashman said he has also asked Joe Girardi, the 2006
National League Manager of the Year and a current YES Network broadcaster,
and first-base coach Tony Pena to become involved in the interview process.
Whatever decisions are made could play heavily on Rodriguez, the likely
selection for the American League's MVP for 2007. The 32-year-old established
career highs and led the Majors in runs scored (143) and RBIs (156) while
hitting .314 in 2007. He also led the Major Leagues in home runs (54).
While his relationship with Torre had been rocky at times over his four years
in New York, Rodriguez ended the 2007 campaign by stating that he and Torre
were as close as they had ever been. In a revealing interview in late
September, Rodriguez said he had been touched when Torre not only attended a
Labor Day barbecue at Rodriguez's rented Rye, N.Y., home, but was one of the
last guests to leave.
General manager Brian Cashman has repeatedly insisted that if Rodriguez opts
out of his contract, as many expect he will, the Yankees will not pursue him
as a free agent on the open market. The club is expected to prepare a
contract extension for Rodriguez that could make it unnecessary for him to
test the free agent market.
Bowa moving on? One of Torre's trusted lieutenants may follow him out the
door. Third-base coach Larry Bowa is mulling an offer to serve the same
position with the Seattle Mariners, according to published reports.
Bowa, 61, completed his second season as a Yankees coach in 2007, where he
was a helpful presence for numerous players, most notably second baseman
Robinson Cano, with whom Bowa worked on a regular basis. The two drilled hard
on defense during Spring Training, reporting to Legends Field for
early-morning sessions several times per week.
If Bowa departs, that would erase one possible bench coach from the picture
for the next managerial candidate. The Yankees have seen two persons
mentioned as potential managers drop off the board this week: Tony La Russa
said in reports that he plans to return to the Cardinals next season, and
Trey Hillman, a former manager in the Yankees farm system, accepted the
Royals' managerial job.
The contracts of the Yankees' coaching staff expire Oct. 31. In addition to
Bowa, Pena and Mattingly, the club will have to make decisions on pitching
coach Ron Guidry, bullpen coach Joe Kerrigan and hitting coach Kevin Long.
