If Rodriguez Price Falls, Mets Might Be Interested
ORLANDO, Fla., Nov. 7 — The Mets had a meeting Wednesday with Scott Boras,
the agent for third baseman Alex Rodriguez, staying on the fringes of
negotiations for the marquee free agent of the off-season.
There are no indications that the Mets are seriously interested in Rodriguez,
because they have All-Star players at third base and shortstop and their
greater need is pitching. But the Mets will closely monitor Rodriguez’s
negotiations in case he falls into their price range. Speaking generally,
Mets General Manager Omar Minaya said, “It’s so early in free agency, I’d
just rather keep all my options open.”
The Los Angeles Angels could be a more aggressive bidder for Rodriguez, who
opted out of his contract with the Yankees during Game 4 of the World Series
on Oct. 28. The Yankees have vowed not to chase Rodriguez as a free agent,
and the only way he would return is if he surprised the Yankees and Boras by
accepting salary arbitration or taking a deal well below his market value.
Tony Reagins, the Angels’ new general manager, said he had a conversation
with Boras, but mainly to get acquainted. Yet, unlike the Yankees before
Rodriguez opted out, the Angels at this point have no desire to meet with
Rodriguez in person.
“I will follow the proper protocol, which is to speak with his
representatives,” Reagins said. Reagins said the Angels had no qualms about
devoting a major chunk of their payroll to one player. “We’re not going to
limit ourselves,” he said.
Minaya said he also had flexibility to add to his payroll, but he seems more
inclined to spend heavily on pitching.
“I always believe, whenever the dollars are available, you first try to
invest in pitching,” he said.
The Mets are intrigued by the free-agent right-hander Carlos Silva, a
sinkerballer for the Minnesota Twins, but Minaya has not spoken with his
agents at the general managers’ meetings. Minaya also said the Mets planned
to meet with Tom Glavine if Glavine decides he wants to keep pitching.
“It’s fair to say if he wants to come back, we’re going to sit down with
him and see what he’s looking for,” Minaya said.
Glavine, who turns 42 in March and lives near Atlanta, has spent the last
five seasons with the Mets after pitching for the Braves for 16 years. The
Braves have talked with Glavine and his agent, Gregg Clifton, and his return
there is more realistic than it was last season, when Atlanta never made an
offer.
“This year, he’s going to have the option of Atlanta,” Minaya said. “We’
re going to just let him spend time with his family and decide what he wants
to do.”
Frank Wren, the Braves’ general manager, said: “We’re going to be able to
sign some free agents. We hope to improve our starting pitching, so he’s a
guy we’ll consider.”
如果A-Rod降價有興趣的隊伍應該會不少吧
