A-Rod's call to Yankees just a negotiating ploy
Wallace Matthews
November 15, 2007
If you really believe Alex Rodriguez is going to negotiate with the Yankees
without Scott Boras in the room, you probably also believe Ali G is about to
be hired as a correspondent by "60 Minutes".
You probably believe the Major League Baseball Players Association is about
to abolish the DH, recommend the contraction of half the National League, ask
players to pay for their own meals on the road and hand George Mitchell his
reading glasses as he reads off the names of every player who can so much as
spell H-G-H.
You probably believe that someday, the commissioner of baseball will be
allowed to own a team. (Oh, wait a minute ... )
So A-Rod made a call to Boy George and his cronies down in Tampa. So what?
Talking ain't negotiating. When it comes time to really talk dollars, you can
bet Scott Boras will be involved.
After all, unless Rodriguez is even more duplicitous and disloyal than even I
would have thought possible, there is no earthly reason for him to be dis-
pleased with his agent. Seven years ago, Boras promised A-Rod the richest
contract in the history of sports. He delivered. And seven years later, the
deal remains untouched.
So now, a full two days into the free-agent negotiation period, you're
telling me A-Rod is getting impatient with Boras? Don't be a tool.
If you think Rodriguez was overmatched by Fausto Carmona in the ALDS, just
wait till you see how well he does with the Boss Brothers, Brian Cashman,
Randy Levine and Lonn Trost, staring at him across a negotiating table.
A-Rod may be a lot of things - vain, sensitive, insecure and artificial come
to mind - but he is not stupid. He knows where his talents lie: on the field,
not in a meeting room. He's also sharp enough to know that a little flattery
from a star athlete goes a long way with the audience he's trying to cultivate.
The Yankees needed A-Rod to make that phone call, to help them save face over
the "opt and yer outta here" approach they adopted during the season, and A-
Rod needed to make the call in order to do what he does best, which is paint
himself as the helpless good guy at the mercy of a greedy, ruthless agent.
Now that both sides have gotten their posturing out of the way, they can
really get down to business. And that means Boras.
Do you really believe for a moment that Donald Fehr and Gene Orza, who
stepped in and voided A-Rod's proposed move from the Rangers to the Red Sox
because it would have involved giving back some salary, are going to stand by
and allow Rodriguez to be worked over in a room by the Tampa Mafia?
Do you think Boras, who has a contract with A-Rod, is going to allow himself
to be cut out of this kind of a deal?
Yeah, yeah, I know, at the end of the day, Boras works for A-Rod, not the
other way around. So does the landscaper at Castle Rodriguez. Do you think
Alex Rodriguez is going to go out and mow his own lawn if the guy misses a
spot? No, he'd get a new landscaper. The same way, if he were unhappy with
Boras, he'd get a new agent.
The guy got him $25 million a year for the past seven years and now, after
the best season of his career, is positioned to get him even more. Boy, A-Rod
must be furious with him.
There are, of course, several rational ways to read the situation. The most
obvious is that Cynthia Rodriguez must really love living, playing and
shopping in New York. The second is A-Rod's almost pathological need to have
people like him, even former employers.
The third, and most likely, is that this is an unusually shrewd move even for
Boras, who needs the Yankees, or even just the threat of the Yankees, to be
active in the bidding process if he is ever going to attract the kind of
money he apparently has promised his client.
For 5 percent of A-Rod's next deal, Boras will gladly allow himself to be
painted as the villain, or worse, the fall guy. Next thing you know, the door
that had been shut in their faces has been re-opened for A-Rod, and where
A-Rod goes, Boras is sure to follow.
If anyone is being used here, it's the Yankees, but they must know this,
mustn't they? Because if they believe they're getting Rodriguez in a room by
himself, they must also believe somebody can do a better job of managing this
team than Joe Torre. (Oh, wait a minute ... )
