The Yankees third baseman has been named as a sixth award recipient for this year's Thurman Munson Awards dinner, acknowledging excellence in competition and philanthropic work within the community. Yankees center fielder Melky Cabrera, Mets third baseman David Wright, former Houston Astros infielder Craig Biggio, New York Knicks shooting guard Jamal Crawford and Olympic gold medal-winning figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi will also receive "Thurmans" at the 28th annual Munson Awards dinner, to be held Feb. 5 at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in Times Square. "It is a privilege and honor to receive the Munson Award," Rodriguez said in a statement. "Knowing of Thurman's legacy in the storied history of the Yankees franchise, and how much the dinner has done to assist children through AHRC NYC Foundation, it is a special honor that I will always cherish." The AHRC New York City Foundation benefits from the gala, which remembers Munson, the late, great Yankees catcher and captain who died tragically in a 1979 plane crash. Diana Munson, Thurman's widow, has been involved in the benefit since its inception, raising nearly $9 million to assist children and adults with developmental disabilities. "I look forward to seeing Diana and being a part of a wonderful evening at the benefit," Rodriguez said. Len Berman of NBC Sports will serve as the master of ceremonies. Andrew F. Corrado, divisional vice president of North Fork Bank, will be the recipient of the Corporate Hero Award. The reigning American League Most Valuable Player, Rodriguez had one of his finest all-around seasons in 2007, helping to lead the Yankees to 94 victories and their 13th consecutive postseason appearance. The 32-year-old Rodriguez established career highs with 143 runs and 156 RBIs while batting .314 with 54 home runs and 24 stolen bases in 158 games for New York. Rodriguez led the Major Leagues in runs, home runs, RBIs and slugging percentage, driving in one run every 3.7 at-bats. Rodriguez's season was also highlighted by his 500th career home run on Aug. 4 against Kansas City, making A-Rod the 22nd and youngest player in big league history to reach that plateau. His offseason began on a tumultuous note, as word of a contractual opt-out was delivered during Game 4 of the World Series, but Rodriguez and the Yankees eventually reunited, agreeing to terms on a 10-year, $275 million contract that could be worth as much as $300 million if Rodriguez sets the all-time home run record while wearing pinstripes. The Munson Awards dinner has previously honored such notables as Willie Randolph, Mariano Rivera, Muhammad Ali, Yogi Berra, Goose Gossage, Don Mattingly, Jorge Posada, Joe Torre, Patrick Ewing, Bernie Williams, Arthur Ashe, Willis Reed, Earl Monroe, Willie Mays, Mark Messier, Mike Richter, Tom Seaver and John Franco. Yankees right-hander Mike Mussina was among last year's award recipients. The AHRC New York City Foundation is a not-for-profit organization that supports programs enabling children and adults with developmental dis- abilities to lead richer, more productive lives, including programs of AHRC New York City.
