Kevin Long on A-Rod’s Motivations and Mind-Set http://bats.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/02/09/kevin-long-on-a-rods-motivations- and-mindset/ The Yankees have stayed silent on Alex Rodriguez, issuing a statement late Monday but saying nothing else. We’ve heard nothing from the voices of Hal Steinbrenner, Brian Cashman or Joe Girardi. Fortunately, Kevin Long, the Yankees’ hitting instructor, was ready to share his thoughts. Long is one of the few Yankees people I would consider close with Alex. As I read him some of Rodriguez’s comments over the phone this afternoon, Long said he was glad Rodriguez came forward and must realize that he never needed steroids in the first place. “I don’t think he needed to do them,” Long said. “But knowing Alex, if everyone else was doing it and there was a possibility that someone else could be better than him, he wasn’t going to allow that to happen. That’s the best way to explain it.” Long also said Rodriguez is driven to be the greatest player in baseball history, and the stain on his legacy would be difficult. “That part of it is going to be tough,” Long said. “There are going to be certain people that go, ‘He’s a cheater, he did stuff he shouldn’t have done.’ Well, look at it however you want, but I saw him hit 54 (home runs), and they get tested all the time now. There’s not a big disparity of what he did then and the numbers he puts up now.” Rodriguez’s numbers with Texas were generally better than his Yankees stats. But considering that Rodriguez is older now, and that he played in a better park for a right-handed hitter in Texas, the difference is probably negligible. No one disputes that Rodriguez has always possessed extraordinary talent, on or off steroids. Long said in November that Rodriguez would have a better season in 2009 because he would be free from the personal distractions of last season, when he went through a very public divorce. He stood by that prediction on Monday. “You know what? A part of him is probably glad this is out,” Long said. “Maybe he’s glad this is out in the open. It’s something, at that time, that they were allowed to do, pretty much. So a part of me thinks Alex will think it’s a relief. I know Alex, and I know anything he hides or has to keep inside, it gets to him. I don’t think it’s going to have any effect. I really think he’s going to be fine.” For the Yankees’ sake, he’d better be. Or 2009 will be the start of a very long nine years until the end of Rodriguez’s contract. -- 宇宙裡的微小塵埃 http://www.wretch.cc/blog/AllyDai -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 203.71.94.5
