Slugger spends Saturday evening on diamond with NYC kids

NEW YORK -- Alex Rodriguez not only gave a group of children the memory of a
lifetime on Saturday -- he also gave Richard Gere an important lesson about
baseball.

The first part was expected: Rodriguez spent his evening managing a Little
League team from the Bronx, giving those kids an experience they likely will
never forget. But teaching Gere something about baseball? Probably not an
anticipated part of the program.

One thing is for sure, though -- Gere will never forget the correct way to
argue with an umpire from now on.

Rodriguez and Gere were at Franz Sigel Park in the Bronx, managing teams in an
All-Star Little League game. Rodriguez, the Yankees' star third baseman, helmed
the United Youth Baseball League squad from the Bronx, while Gere led the
Dominican Federation team from Manhattan. It was an exciting event that started
roughly an hour after the Yankees' 9-6 loss to the Rays earlier in the day, a
contest in which Rodriguez hit a home run. Rodriguez's team beat Gere's team in
a short three-inning contest.

In the first inning, Gere played to the raucous crowd by coming out to argue a
call with one of the base umpires. He retreated to his dugout after jokingly
bantering with the ump, pretending to be upset and coming dangerously close to
bumping him. On the way back, Rodriguez gave him one important piece of advice
-- never touch the umpire. This was one of several lighthearted moments
throughout the evening between the two stars that highlighted the game.

Rodriguez arrived in a Chevy SUV to a loud ovation by a large audience
surrounding the park. He took a lap around the field, shaking hands with the
young ballplayers before the game began.

Once it started, Rodriguez took his place coaching third, but quickly returned
to the dugout after a foul line drive almost hit him. After that, he coached
first. He and Gere, who starred in films such as "Pretty Woman" and "Chicago,"
spent the rest of the game chatting with the kids and appeared to have a good
time.

Immediatlely after the final out, the two celebrities met for an award ceremony

a trophy, and he and Gere posed for a photo op. Shortly after, Rodriguez was
escorted back to his car and drove away, capping what was a fun event for those
in attendance.

For Rodriguez, the whole evening was just about giving back.

"To be able to give a few minutes of your time, to share some words of wisdom
with the kids, it's really great," Rodriguez said.
