[Dubai Duty Free Women's Open]Maleeva, Pierce advance in Qatar
Doha, Qatar (Sports Network) -
Third-seeded Bulgarian Magdalena Maleeva and former top-5 star Mary Pierce of
France were among Monday's first-round winners at the $170,000 Qatar Open.
Maleeva mauled Paraguay's Rossana Neffa-de los Rios, 6-2, 6-1, while the
unseeded Pierce overcame German Anca Barna, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3, on the outdoor
hardcourts at Khalifa International Tennis Complex.
An upset came when Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova cut down sixth-seeded Italian
Francesca Schiavone, 6-2, 6-3.
In other opening-round action, Russian Dinara Safina stopped Italian
Adriana Serra Zanetti, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6), and Slovakian Martina Sucha capped the
day's festivities with a 6-4, 6-7 (6-8), 6-4 decision against Swiss Emmanuelle
Gagliardi. Safina is the younger sister of popular men's tennis star Marat
Safin.
This week's top seed is also the defending champion -- American Monica Seles.
The former world No. 1 captured the inaugural title last year by beating Thai
Tamarine Tanasugarn in the final. Seles will open her week against China's Jie
Zheng or Russia's Lina Krasnoroutskaya.
Seles received a first-round bye, along with second seed Anastasia
Myskina of Russia. Myskina's second-round opponent will be the oft-injured
Pierce.
The 2003 Doha champion will claim $27,000.
