Top seed Andre Agassi continued his 2003 dominance with a 6-4, 6-1 second
round victory over wild card Mark Philippoussis in the Siebel Open. Agassi
only lost four points in eight service games (11 for the tournament) as he

his last six matches he has only dropped serve once while breaking opponents
31 times.
No. 3 seed James Blake rolled to a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Hyung-Taik Lee to
move into the quarterfinals for the second straight year. Blake plays No. 7

round. The American won the previous meeting with the Russian at last year's
US Open.
Unseeded Vincent Spadea advanced to his first ATP quarterfinal in the U.S.
since reaching the final in Indianapolis in August 1999. Spadea defeated No. 4

is appearing in his first San Jose quarterfinal since 1996. Spadea takes on
No. 6 seed Davide Sanguinetti in the quarterfinals. The Italian beat American
Mardy Fish 7-6(1), 7-5 to reach his second straight quarterfinal (Milan).

before Carlsen rallied to win the last three games. The Dane takes on unseeded
Justin Gimelstob, who reached the quarterfinals in San Jose for the third time
in five years. Gimelstob beat qualifier Zach Fleishman 6-1, 6-4.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
Agassi: "It was a great night tonight and I was just trying to contain his
big weapons. I'm peaking at the right time in the tournament and playing as
well as I did in Australia."
Blake: "I played very well and better than yesterday (Wednesday)."
About Nikolay Davydenko "He has improved a whole lot and he's playing with a
lot of confidence. He gets a lot of balls back and stays back."
Spadea: "This is a good step forward and I've put a lot of hard work in the
last one and a-half years and it's paying off."
Gimelstob: "I've put in a lot of work in the last couple of years, playing
Challengers all over the world and I couldn't be prouder the way I've worked
my way back."
