[Qatar TotalFinaElf Open 2003]All-Russian final in Doha
Doha, Qatar (Sports Network) - For the first time in its history, the WTA Tour
will witness its first-ever all-Russian final, as second seed Anastasia Myskina
faces fifth seed Elena Likhovtseva on Sunday at the $170,000 Qatar Open tennis
tournament.
Myskina beat Austrian Patricia Wartusch, 6-3, 6-3 on Saturday, while
Likhovtseva breezed past Russian wild card Lina Krasnoroutskaya, 6-4, 6-3 in
the other semifinal.
The last time Russia occupied the last two spots on the draw was in 1972 when
Olga Morozova defeated Marina Kroshina in the final of the Eastern Grass Court
Championships in New Jersey. At that time, Russia was part of the Soviet Union.
"This is great," said Elena Likhovsteva. "It is good for Russian tennis, there
are so many of us today, that it was bound to happen. Although it is harder to
play your compatriot, I like to play them because the challenge is bigger and
you always want to beat someone from your country."
The 27-year-old Likhovtseva, the first modern Russian player to crack the top
20 on December 23, 1996, has two career titles.
The 21-year-old Myskina also has won a pair of championships.
"It feels really good," said Myskina. "But I am not surprised, there are so
many of us competing on the tour now. In this tournament, there were five of
us, the most representatives, and half of the quarterfinalists were Russian,
so it’s not surprising that two if us end up in the final."
