[Qatar TotalFinaElf Open 2003]Myskina wins all-Russian final in
Doha, Qatar (Sports Network) - Second-seeded Anastasia Myskina had no problem
defeating her fellow Russian and fifth seed Elena Likhovtseva in straight sets
on Sunday to capture the $170,000 Qatar Open tennis tournament.
This was the first time in WTA Tour history that there was an all-Russian
final.
The match lasted just 58 minutes.
Myskina, 21, captured her third-career title, 6-3, 6-1, and took home $27,000
for her efforts. She beat Austrian Patricia Wartusch, 6-3, 6-3 on Saturday to
gain a berth in the final.
The 27-year-old Likhovtseva, the first modern Russian player to crack the top
20 on December 23, 1996, failed to win her third career title.
The last time Russia occupied the last two spots on the draw was in 1972 when
Olga Morozova defeated Marina Kroshina in the final of the Eastern Grass Court
Championships in New Jersey. At that time, Russia was part of the Soviet Union.
