[Dubai]Schiavone wins opener in Dubai
Dubai, United Arab Emirates (Sports Network) - Italy's Francesca Schiavone
captured her opening-round match against Tatiana Panova of Russia 6-4, 6-0
Monday at the Dubai Open.
Schiavone will next play fourth seed Monica Seles of the United States on
Tuesday. Seles and the other three top-seeded players received opening-round
byes in the $585,000 outdoor tournament. Second seed Amelie Mauresmo is the
defending champion. Justine Henin-Hardenne is the top seed, while Jennifer
Capriati is seeded third.
The two other Russians won their first-round matches Monday. Lina
Krasnoroutskaya beat Italian Adriana Serra Zanetti, 6-3, 6-0; and Svetlana
Kuznetsova got by Croatia's Iva Majoli, 7-6 (7-2), 6-2.
Fifth seed Anastasia Myskina, fresh off her title over Elena Likhovtseva on
Sunday at the Qatar Open tennis tournament, will play fellow Russian Dinara
Safina on Tuesday. Sunday's victory by Myskina came in the first-ever
all-Russian final on the WTA Tour. Additionally, the win propelled the
21-year-old Myskina into the top 10 for the very first time, becoming the
first Russian woman to rank in that elite group since Elena Dementieva exited
the top 10 on June 11, 2001 and Anna Kournikova followed suit just seven days
later.
