[Rotterdam]Kafelnikov celebrates his birthday in style: 6-2 6-0
Yevgeny Kafelnikov does not stand on ceremony. Once the Russian tennis star
steps out on court, he likes to win as quickly as possible. Even on his 29th
birthday the man from Sochi was in no mood for giving away presents to
Feliciano Lopez. "When it’s your birthday, you’re supposed to receive them,"
he coolly replied.
It was not a day his young Spanish opponent will lightly forget. The
left-hander Lopez has an excellent forehand, but tried to run around his
backhand too often. Ahoy’ is a fast court and he was sent scurrying to all
corners. He lost his first service game to love and Kafelnikov then powered
into a 5-2 lead before winning the set 6-2, again on Lopez’s serve.
The second set was a mere formality. Despite strong crowd support, Lopez had
no chance whatsoever. His best performance was in the last game, when he
managed to reach deuce. But in a carbon copy of the first set, he sealed his
own fate with a failed drop shot: 6-0.
"It went very well," the winner confirmed. "I still enjoy myself on the court.
I’m feeling a lot better after my operation. My only aim is to regain the
form I had a few years ago." The prospect of a possible second round
confrontation with Marat Safin does not worry him. "It’s a match just like
any other." The current score between them is 2-1 in Safin’s favour. The
last time the Russians were pitted against each other was in 2001 in
St. Petersburg.
