Marat Safin appears to have recovered completely from the wrist injury he
sustained four weeks ago. The 23-year old Russian comfortably made it to
the second round, beating Xavier Malisse 7-5, 6-3. Safin: "I had a few
difficult moments during the first set. But I soon got into my rhythm, which
boosted my confidence."
His wrist, which he injured while playing Raemon Sluiter at the Australian
Open, gave him very few problems. "When I sustained my injury, I was given
an injection that almost killed me" says Safin, who would love to have played
during last February’s Davis Cup match. "It would have been fairly
irresponsible though. I simply need to be patient. However, if the pain
returns, I will probably need surgery."
Marat Safin has already formulated his objectives for this year. "I would
like to win a Grand Slam tournament" he says. Safin has recently started
working with his new coach, Denis Golovanov. "He’s only a year older than
I am. I helped him out financially when he started out as a professional.
Unfortunately for Denis, he is not quite good enough to rank among the top
players. Fortunately for me, he stopped playing to become my coach. Denis
understands me extremely well and I trust his judgement
completely."
He will need all the support he can get when he plays fellow countryman
Yevgeny Kafelnikov tomorrow night. Says Safin: "We are well-matched. It will
all boil down to mental agility. Whoever scores on that front will probably
win."
