[ROTTERDAM]Kafelnikov beats Safin during evening match

Yevgeny Kafelnikov has absolute no intentions of abdicating as the King of
Russian tennis. As was clearly evident tonight, he simply refuses to
surrender the crown without a fight. The 29-year old from Sochi dug in deep
during his encounter with Marat Safin, who has an age advantage of six years.
Kafelnikov won 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4.
At 30 minutes past midnight, the worn-out Russians finally left court. Their
monumental encounter saw Safin take the early initiative. A single service
break proved enough for him to take the first set. He again broke Kafelnikov
in the third game of the second set. But just as the match appeared to head
for an early conclusion, Kafelnikov fought back and broke his opponent’s
service to level the score at 3-3. With Safin serving for the match at 6-5,
Kafelnikov managed to force an all-important service break. During the ensuing
tie-break, Marat Safin again had several opportunities to take the match. But
again he let them slip. A poor shot at 5-4 allowed Kafelnikov to take the
second set (tie-break score: 7-5).
Having fought back, Kafelnikov dropped his service early in the third set, to
go 2-0 down. But once again he staged a remarkable comeback, clinching a
decisive service break in the seventh game. Now trailing 5-3, Safin had three
break points to get back into the match. However, Kafelnikov produced several
stunning shots to win the game and the set (6-4). He may be the oldest, but
for the time being Kafelnikov justifiably retains his crown.
