Max Mirnyi beat Yevgeny Kafelnikov 7-6 (5), 7-6 (4) to secure a place in the semi-finals of the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament for the first time ever. In 2001 he lost to Andreas Vinciguerra while in 2002 he suffered defeat at the hands of Ivo Heuberger. Both were second round matches that were decided in a tie-break. It was a unique encounter for Mirnyi: "Yevgeny and I have been friends for years and we know each other well. The same applies to Roger Federer, my next opponent. I have played doubles with Roger for three years and we also spend time together off court. It will be a battle between friends, I guess." Mirnyi beat his doubles partner as recently as the US Open (August of 2002). To complicate matters, Mirnyi and Federer are also scheduled to play their doubles semi-final tomorrow afternoon. On paper, Kafelnikov was the favourite going into the match (4-2). However, the Russian still felt the after-effects of last night’s battle with Marat Safin. "Although it will undoubtedly have played a role, at least Yevgeny didn’t have to adjust to my game. My tennis is brief and to the point" Mirnyi explained afterwards. The match went with service and even though Mirnyi and Kafelnikov both faced several break points, it took two tie-breaks to separate the players.
