Roger Federer's 6-3 6-3 defeat of Irakli Labadze earned the top seed a place
in round two and a belated pay day.
The world number five from Switzerland was accused of not trying after last
year's defeat by Germany's Rainer Schuttler and had his prize money withheld.
It brought a fierce difference of opinion between Federer and then tournament
director Jeff Chapman.
Eventually a deal was struck for Federer to receive last year's appearance
money by producing a fully committed performance this year.
"The ATP reviewed it (last year's match) and didn't believe I was not giving
of my best," said Federer.
"I was really tired and had horrible jet lag. I was surprised that the
tournament director attacked me and other players.
"I am happy that there is a new director (Salah Tahlak), but not happy that
those things were said about me.
"I am here to try to prove them wrong. For me it's important that I stay
professional and give my best so people don't come up with comments like last
year."
Second seed Marat Safin suffered a shock second-round defeat to Spain's Tommy
Robredo, losing 7-5 4-6 7-6 in a marathon two hour 51 minute battle.
"Right now I am lost. I think I'm playing good but I cannot win," said Safin
in a statement after refusing to attend a post-match news conference.
"The only thing I can say is that I was there, I was fighting but the luck was
not on my side."
Holder Fabrice Santoro was also beaten, going down 3-6 7-6 (7/2) 7-6 (7/5) to
sixth seed Sjeng Schalken, who saved three match points.
There were also victories for third seed Jiri Novak, who beat Russia's Andrei
Stoliarov 6-1, 6-1, and Max Mirnyi, who saw off Romania's Adrian Voinea 6-4
6-2.
