Roger Federer, the top seed, advanced at the Dubai Tennis Championships. Wednesday saw No.2 seed Marat Safin and No.7 seed and local favorite Younes El Aynaoui, knocked out of the tournament in two close matches by two young Spanish players, Tommy Robredo and Feliciano Lopez. No. 6 seed Sjeng Schalken took 2 hours 57 minutes to end defending champion’s Fabrice Santoro run, while top seeded Roger Federer breezed through his first round match as did Rotterdam winner, Max Mirnyi. WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID Federer: “It was still a tough match and I really had to watch out because I knew he takes a lot of risks. For me, all I could do was to make sure to have a high first serve percentage, scramble to get balls back, make him play and not give him shoulder high ball. That’s why I used a lot of slice today. I feel strange to win these kind of matches, playing so passive. Normally my game is more to attack, but with a lefty he doesn’t really allow you to do that, especially on his service games. I’m very happy to win this one.” Schalken: “He carries the opponent into a very physical match. I don’t have too much power. It’s tough to overpower him, which is why they become those long rallies. It was a very tough match. In the beginning I was not playing the way I liked. From the beginning of the second set, I started to attack more which made me more comfortable because that’s my game. In the beginning I felt like I was playing against a wall because he hits everything back, so you have to follow the ball up and go to the net, otherwise you keep hitting until you make a mistake.” Santoro: “I played much better than in the first round against Koubek. You always have some regrets when you have match points and can’t win the match but I really think today was a super match. Sjeng has a very clear game without any weaknesses.” “This year I can say I have had a lot of good defeats. (Lost to El Aynaoui at Doha in 3 sets, Ferrero at the Aust Open in 5 sets). But even good defeats you want to win. The thing that I am missing at the moment is a good tournament where I can reach at the least the semifinal.” Robredo: “I was trying to be so motivated because playing against Marat, it’s great. I try to do my best and finally I could beat him. The confidence of winning a match and a top ten is great. In the last two months, I haven’t won an ATP match - I won at the Hopman Cup, so you start to lose some confidence.” Safin: “I don’t think I am playing a game to win. I’m playing to just stay there and everything I’m trying to do, I’m missing, or it’s too difficult. It’s too complicated and I cannot make it. Right now I am lost. I think I’m playing good but I cannot win. The only thing I can say is that I was there, I was fighting but the luck was not on my side. I tried to do everything possible but just lost. That’s OK, the guy run a lot, he was fighting. His game is more practical than mine. This was a different match to yesterday and I have no answers.” -- Safin真的很沮喪...要提起精神來喔! -- 如果人生能重來,你會再選擇一次嗎? 會的。然後,重蹈覆轍,重蹈覆轍。 這就是人生。 -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.csie.ntu.edu.tw) ◆ From: 61.225.198.146
