[Dubai]Schuettler Wins Marathon At Dubai Tennis Championships
Fifth seeded German Rainer Schuettler survived a match point to defeat last
week's Rotterdam champion Max Mirnyi and reach the quarter-finals of the Dubai
Tennis Championships on Thursday.
The Australian Open runner-up needed two hours 39 minutes to earn his 7-6(8-6)
4-6 7-6(10-8) victory against an often brilliant but sometimes erratic
opponent. Although the big-hitter from Belarus was an intimidating figure at
the net and he blasted 11 aces, he also made many careless volley errors and
made 15 double-faults.
Mirnyi broke to lead 1-0 when Schuettler hit a double-fault, but he was unable
to serve out the set at 5-4 and the German sneaked the tiebreak. In the second
set, Mirnyi broke to lead 5-3, lost two set points in the next game as he
double-faulted three times, but he broke again for the set.
In the final set, each player broke once to take the battle to a dramatic
tiebreak. On Schuettler's first match point at 6-5, a ball from Mirnyi was
called out but the umpire reversed the call. Keeping his composure, Schuettler
then saved a match point at 7-6 and finally claimed victory on his third match
point.
"He is in good shape and it's always tough to play against him because I don't
get any rhythm," said Schuettler. "He is serving so good and he tries to finish
the point quickly, so it was a tough fight. He's serving so hard and going for
every shot, and if he makes the first serve it's hard to get the return back."
At one stage during he match a large flock of seagulls flew over the stadium,
and the court had to be cleaned of their droppings. Schuettler saw it as good
luck after a similar incident in India last month.
"That's why I'm playing very good this year and I'm lucky. In Chennai a bird
was pooping on my head during my match, so I think that's a good sign and why
the year has started pretty well," he said.
The Dubai Tennis Championships, which is owned and organized by Dubai Duty Free
and held under the patronage of HH General Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al
Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Minister of Defence, UAE, takes place at the
Dubai Tennis Stadium from 24th February to 2nd March.
