Other seeds that advanced included Marat Safin and Guillermo Coria. Safin, a
former champion in Barcelona in 2000, is coming off an injury he sustained
while training for Russia's Davis Cup tie against Argentina three weeks ago.
He said the ankle felt fine, while defeating qualifier Salvador Navarro for
his first clay court win on the year.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
Safin: "The ankle is better. It has been three weeks since I haven't played a
match. It's difficult to come back. You are lacking in confidence and you are
scared to move around the court. When the match began, I was a little bit too
nervous. After the first set, I began to build up my confidence and find my
rhythm."
"I want to keep on playing without incurring any more injuries. This year, I
haven't been able to play even three consecutive weeks without becoming
injured. Now I want to do well here in Barcelona and then the big tournaments.
If I stay fit, my confidence will come back. I want to win Roland Garros.
That's my main goal. I going to be at Roland Garros and take my chances. I am
going to be dangerous this year."
