No. 1 and 2 seeds from Spain Juan Carlos Ferrero and Carlos Moya both advanced after winning close first sets. Ferrero defeated Franco Squillari 6-4, 6-3, while Moya had a tough first set with Romania's Adrian Voinea, but advanced 7-6(3), 6-3. Three-time Roland Garros champion Gustavo Kuerten defeated Felix Mantilla by the identical score after stepping up his game in the first set tiebreak to win it 7-6(1), 6-3. Mantilla won the first three matches against Kuerten in their head-to-head record, but Kuerten has now come out on top the past four times they have met. In a much-awaited match Wednesday afternoon at the Real Club de Tenis Barcelona , Alex Corretja showed that the Spanish veterans are not ready just yet to hand over the mantle to the young stars of tomorrow as Corretja defeated Mallorcan sensation Rafael Nadal in three sets 3-6, 6-2, 6-1. The 16-year-old broke into the ATP's Top 100 this week for the first time after reaching the third round at the Tennis Masters Monte-Carlo. No. 6 seed David Nalbandian of Argentina was upended by Russia's Nikolay Davydenko just three weeks after Nalbandian defeated Davydenko in a pivotal Davis Cup match in Argentina's second round victory over defending champion Russia. Morocco's Younes El Aynaoui continued his domination of 2001 Tennis Masters Hamburg champion Albert Portas with a straight set win. El Aynaoui has now won all seven of their head-to-head match-ups. Italy's Filippo Volandri continues to make waves during the clay court season. The only qualifier left in the Barcelona draw, Volandri came back from a set down to defeat wild card entry Galo Blanco and move into the third round. Including qualifying matches, Volandri is now 9-1 the past two weeks including a 4-0 record in Barcelona and a quarterfinal showing at the Tennis Masters Monte-Carlo. And Dominik Hrbaty also advanced when Guillermo Coria had to retire in the first set of their match with an abdominal hernia that prevented him from serving properly. The injury will keep him out of the ATP event in Valencia next week, but he is expecting to play the Telecom Italia Masters in Rome. WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID Kuerten: "He started out in good form. Even though I was 5-1 down, I knew I was playing great tennis. I see it already as a reward for me from last week. Today's win was a result from all the hard work I have done over the last days. I think this match was important, not only for the score, but from the mental toughness I can get from it." "It is always tough to play Mantilla, especially on clay and before his home crowd. It was a beautiful, sunny day, a great crowd and I had a good time out there, it was a good match for me." "My next round will be difficult, but I think I'll be ready. It is going to be a good test for me tomorrow because Younes (El Aynaoui) has been playing great tennis. I will be motivated to win and reach the quarterfinals here." Volandri: "I was so tired at 5-5 in the first set. Physically, I was completely off. I still had the power in my shots, but my legs felt so tired. Maybe my confidence allowed me to do something. The shots were still there. If you have the feeling, you can do anything." On his next opponent "If Ferrero wins, I will go on court and see what I can do. Even if I play Squillari in the next round, he will make a tough opponent." Nadal: "I was angry because I couldn't win. Corretja showed he was not afraid to play against a young guy. He was very serious on the court and knew he had to work hard to win. He didn't give up after losing the first set. I wasn't comfortable in the next two sets. He made me play on the defensive, which isn't my game." Moya: "It was a good victory for me. The fist match of every tournament is always difficult. I've been playing well now for a number of months. I come here from a final in Miami and semifinals in Monte-Carlo. I've come close to winning this tournament, but never have done. I want to see if I can do it this time." Ferrero: "I don't feel under pressure that everyone sees me as the favorite to win this tournament as the No.1 seed. I am feeling very comfortable on the court having defended all the ranking points at Tennis Masters Monte-Carlo. The balls are different here. They are heavier, but I soon got a good feel for them." "I am setting my goals on winning Roland Garros this year. I also want to do well at the US Open and the Tennis Masters Cup in Houston is very important to me." Corretja: "It was a very good match for me. I have come here having lost many first round matches. I was really in need of a good hard match. I prefer to come through a hard three-set match, than win 6-1, 6-1. It builds up my confidence and mental game." "It was a difficult match. Everybody was expecting a Nadal bomb. There was a lot of attention circulating the match." "I know I am doing the right things with regard to my practice and fitness training, but I just need to go out there and win more matches again." "The way Nadal plays at his young as is improper. If he carries on like progressing as he has, he will have a very bright future ahead of him. He's clearly a very determined player." THURSDAY MATCHES Eight third round matches Thursday at the Open SEAT Godo 2003, with six Spanish players still alive in the draw hoping to move on to the quarterfinals. It's an all-Spanish match-up with Alex Corretja playing a younger countryman for the second match in a row, when he goes up against 12th-seeded Tommy Robredo for the first time in his career. Juan Carlos Ferrero will be a strong favorite in his first head-to-head against qualifier Filippo Volandri of Italy. Volandri is looking to get to the quarterfinals of an ATP event for the second consecutive time. He is 9-1 the past two weeks and 2-0 in three set matches. Ferrero is on a eight-match winning streak that includes a Davis Cup win and his tournament title in Monte-Carlo last week. Carlos Moya and Dominik Hrbaty played here five years ago, when Moya advanced in three sets. The two have played four times but have not faced off in almost three years since Hrbaty defeated Moya indoors in Stuttgart. They meet on Court Central again Thursday. Last year's champion Gaston Gaudio puts his eight match winning streak in Barcelona on the line against David Sanchez, who turned 25-years-old on Sunday. Perhaps the most exciting match-up of the day will be 31-year-old Moroccan Younes El Aynaoui facing Guga Kuerten. Both times these stars have met, it has been Guga winning 6-4 in the third set and he's gone on to post a good result at each tournament. When Kuerten defeated El Aynaoui at the Tennis Masters Monte-Carlo in 2001 he went on to win the tournament; last year, he reached the final in Lyon after defeating El Aynaoui. Two Russians remaining in the field. Marat Safin is 0-1 against Finland's Jarkko Nieminen on clay, while Nikolay Davydenko and Jose Acasuso face off for the first time at the ATP level, though they have played at Challengers and Futures tournaments in the past. It is the only third round match between two unseeded players. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.csie.ntu.edu.tw) ◆ From: 61.64.84.168 ※ 編輯: MARSAFIN 來自: 61.225.195.34 (04/24 17:48)
