Top seed Juan Carlos Ferrero earned a 6-4, 6-4 victory over 19-year-old wild card Guillermo Garcia-Lopez at the CAM Open Comunidad Valenciana on Tuesday. Ferrero has been a terror on the clay this season, winning the title at the Tennis Masters Monte-Carlo and reaching the semifinals last week in Barcelona. The Spaniard now stands in the fourth position of the ATP Champions Race, and is looking for a strong run in Valencia this week to challenge for the No. 3 spot, held by Rainer Schuettler. No. 2 seed Marat Safin, however, stumbled out of Valencia early, falling to Argentine Franco Squillari 6-4, 5-7, 6-2. After struggling early this year, the Russian pulled his game together last week in Barcelona, where he defeated Ferrero in the semifinals. He retired from exhaustion during the final against Carlos Moya, but his play last week signalled he was ready to make his move on clay. Also on Tuesday in Valencia, No. 8 seed David Sanchez advanced over qualifier Olivier Patience of France in three sets. Sanchez now meets Nicolas Massu, a straight sets winner over Alberto Martin. WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID Sanchez: "It was a hard match for a first round. When you lose concentration, anyone can beat you. It's very hard to win a match if you aren't playing at your best. Patience played well in the first set. He was serving well and I wasn't quite there. In the second set I broke him at 4-4. That was the turning point of the match." "It's always great to play tennis in your hometown. As a professional tennis player, you tend to be travelling so much as it is." On his next opponent "I think I will have a lot of chances to beat Massu. I hope to beat him in straight sets. Each time you play a three-set match, it adds up and takes a toll on your body." Massu: "All the matches are tough. I had a good first set but then I began to lose my concentration. Alberto (Martin) also started playing better. The set was decided over a tight tie-break." "I am not sure if Martin was playing to his best ability or not, I was only concerned about how I was playing during the match." On his next opponent "I am going to be playing against David Sanchez. It's going to be very similar to today's match. All the Spaniards tend to have a similar game." Gaudio: "The result did surprise me. Andre (Sa) is a solid player, but he is not going through his best moment. This wasn't a normal result for him." "I had the last defeat in Barcelona still in my mind. I tried to get rid of it today and I think I achieved this." Calleri: "It did cost me a little bit at the beginning because the balls and courts are different from Barcelona. Here is much faster and the court is also different. By the second set I managed to adapt myself to the conditions and finish the match quickly. I am playing very well right now and with a lot of confidence. I am hitting the ball very well." Ferrero: "It wasn't a good match because it is difficult to play against someone who you practice with so often." "I am taking a risk with my clay court schedule. It is pretty heavy from now up until Roland Garros. I am scheduled to have one week off before Paris. Playing here is not as tiring as competing abroad. I wanted to see this tournament happen and now that we have the event, I want to see it grow." Safin: "It was difficult to come here after Barcelona. I couldn't adjust my game to the different balls and surface here. I was missing by a little bit each time." "I was a break up in the first set but I couldn't find my rhythm out there. I didn't feel comfortable on the court." WEDNESDAY MATCHES No. 4 seed Gaston Gaudio of Argentina has a Centre Court date with Spain's Galo Blanco Wednesday at the CAM Open Comunidad Valenciana. Gaudio is always a threat on clay. So far in 2003, the Argentine has reached two semifinals - both on clay - at Vina del Mar (l to Rios) and Buenos Aires (l to Coria). Last week, he reached the quarterfinals at Barcelona, an event he won last year. This is only the third ATP event that Blanco has played this year. He reached the quarterfinals at Estoril (l to Robredo). Gaudio won their only previous encounter, in 2001 at Vina del Mar. No. 8 seed David Sanchez is the only other seed in action on Wednesday. Sanchez meets Massu for a spot in the third round. Sanchez won his first ATP title earlier this year, in Vina del Mar, where he defeated an in-form Marcelo Rios in the final. He also reached the quarterfinals at Scottsdale (l to Dent). Massu has had a slow start to the year, but he can never be counted out on clay. He reached the quarterfinals at Casablanca (l to El Aynaoui) and he recently won a clay-court Challenger event in Bermuda. The two players have met twice before, with each winning a match. Most recently, Sanchez overcame Massu in Scottsdale earlier this year. -- 1.蚊子這樣狂打比賽真的很累... 2.Safin反正也很久沒回瓦倫西亞了,在那裡吃完海鮮飯再回來吧! -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.csie.ntu.edu.tw) ◆ From: 61.225.194.203 -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.csie.ntu.edu.tw) ◆ From: 61.225.194.203
