Roger Federer meets Felix Mantilla in Sunday's final at the
Telecom Italia Masters Roma.
Roger Federer advanced to the final of the Telecom Italia Masters
Roma, after Juan Carlos Ferrero retired with the Swiss leading 6-2,
4-2 in their semifinal match.
The Federer-Ferrero showdown brought together two of the world's best
clay court players in the high-profile stage of a Tennis Masters Series
event, but Ferrero couldn't finish the match as inflammation in his right
arm worsened. Ferrero injured his right arm in Valencia, and because of
the injury the Spaniard pulled out of the Tennis Masters Hamburg which
starts Monday.
Federer is now a match away from claiming his fourth ATP title of the
year and his second career Tennis Masters Series trophy. The Swiss,
who won the title last week in Munich, also boasts a 36-6 match record
for the season, the best on the circuit. With his victory Saturday,
Federer also jumped a spot to third place in the ATP Champions Race,
edging Rainer Schuettler.
In Sunday's final, Federer meets Felix Mantilla, who defeated Yevgeny
Kafelnikov 4-6, 7-6(3), 6-4. The Spaniard, who is making his seventh
consecutive showing in Rome, has collected an impressive list of wins
this week. Along with Kafelnikov, he defeated No. 11 seed David
Nalbandian, Mardy Fish, No. 7 Albert Costa and Ivan Ljubicic.
The 28-year-old Barcelona native is seeking his first title of 2003.
All nine of the Spaniard's previous ATP titles have come on clay, the
last in Palermo in September 2001. His best career Tennis Masters result
was a runner-up in Hamburg in 1997 (l. to Medvedev).
LLODRA AND SANTORO CONTINUE THEIR WINNING WAYS
In the first doubles semifinal Frenchmen Michael Llodra and Fabrice Santoro
defeated the defending champion Martin Damm and Cyril Suk of the Czech
Republic. Llodra and Santoro won the Australian Open in January and have
said that their goal is to qualify for the Tennis Masters Cup in Houston
in November. The French pair will meet Australians Wayne Arthurs and Paul
Hanley in the final. The Aussies, winners in Rotterdam in February, upset
Mahesh Bhupathi and Max Mirnyi who took the Tennis Masters Monte
Carlo title last month beating Llodra and Santoro in the final.
Llodra and Santoro are looking to become the first French pair to win in
Rome since Guy Forget and Yannick Noah in 1986 and '87 while the last
Australian team to win in Rome was Mark Edmondson and Kim Warwick in 1980
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
Federer: “I was disappointed with the way the match ended but now I
feel good to be in a (Tennis) Masters Series final. I won in Hamburg
last year and I really want to win this title too.”
“It's always something special, you know. It feels good to have won
a few matches in a row. (Tennis) Masters Series are extremely tough,
- six matches in seven days, you know. It takes a lot out of you.”
“I saw him having treatment, you know, last few days. I knew his
shoulder wasn't good. I mean, you see him in the treatment room
and all this but, you know, you never know how bad it really is.
It can just be prevention or all this kind of stuff.”
“I think this is also in one way a good week, just to get to see
how the other guys play. It was good for me, and especially this
week, who I played and who I beat and how I beat them, for me to
know that I can hang with them from the baseline no problem. So
that was good mentally. “
Ferrero: On the injury
“It had begun when I was playing Valencia. Today it was hurting
a little bit. Then when I was serving, it hurt, a kind of sting
in my arm. That's when I knew it was getting worse.”
“It's nothing serious, but it's hurting. It's an inflammation
of 6 millimeters in my arm. I think because I've been traveling
a lot and playing a lot of matches in a row, maybe I need some rest.”
Mantilla: On his comeback
“I think, first of all, that I am hungry again, you know. The last
two years my mentality was not as good as now. And for me, when you
play like me that you must be running all the day, I don't have the
serve of Sampras or the volley of Rafter or the talent of Agassi, you
know. I must be very focus every point. I must be strong mentally.
“I did a very good preparation in the last couple of months, and that's
the key. If I am strong physically, I am strong mentally. And when I am
like that, I'm dangerous.”
On his semifinal
“Yevgeny and me, I think we play a great match, one of the matches that
you remember always, with a lot of people there watching the match.”
“I think was very important for me, because I was believing all the match
that I could turn the match around. For me, it's the most important to be
strong mentally. That was the key of the match I think.”
Kafelnikov “I would say yes, the fact that I lost in a semifinal in a
Masters Series event, having served for the match at 6-5 in the second
set, yeah, it is frustrating factor. But I'm not disappointed at all
with the way I played. That's good progress for me in the right direction.”
