Hewitt's 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 victory had the capacity crowd of 15,000 at the Rothenbaum on their feet, as the local favorite Hantschk gave the top seed a real scare. Hewitt, playing in his first ATP tournament since losing in the second round of the NASDAQ-100 Open in Miami to Francisco Clavet, needed to draw on all of his experience to stop Hantschk from completing a dramatic comeback in what was an electric atmosphere on Ladies' Day. Hewitt, a semifinalist two years ago, broke serve in the 10th game of the final set, earning a place in the second round against Arnaud Clement on his fourth match point. Earlier in the day, second seed Carlos Moya set up an eagerly anticipated clash with teenage sensation Rafael Nadal after the Spaniard overcame Australian qualifier Scott Draper to reach the second round. Moya, a winner at this year's ATP clay court tournaments in Buenos Aires and Barcelona, needed three sets before progressing with a 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 victory over Draper. The 26-year-old Moya will now meet the 16-year-old Nadal, who like Moya is from Mallorca. Nadal, a finalist in five Challengers this year, qualified into his first Tennis Masters Hamburg and defeated Paul-Henri Mathieu on Monday. Defending champion Roger Federer also progressed to the second round. The third seed, who has won 11 of his 12 matches on clay this year, defeated frequent doubles partner Max Mirnyi 6-3, 6-3 to record his fourth win over the "Beast" in six meetings. Federer, a winner in Marseille, Dubai and Munich as well as a finalist last week at the Telecom Italia Masters in Rome (l. to Mantilla), will now meet qualifier Sargis Sargsian. Also through to the second round at the Rothenbaum is No. 4 seed Andy Roddick, who recorded a comfortable victory over the in-form Ivan Ljubicic to set up a second round clash with Acapulco winner Agustin Calleri. Roddick, who reached the third round in Hamburg last year, came through 6-4, 6-4 against Ljubicic, the Croatian who advanced to the third round at the Tennis Masters Monte-Carlo in April and the quarterfinals at last week's Telecom Italia Masters in Rome. Meanwhile, No. 5 seed Albert Costa continued his quest for a second title in Hamburg following his victory at the Rothenbaum in 1998. The reigning Roland Garros champion had little trouble against German wild card Nicolas Kiefer, moving through to the second round with a 6-4, 6-4 victory. He now meets Belgium's Olivier Rochus. Local favorite Rainer Schuettler, the No. 9 seed, set up an all-German clash against Lars Burgsmuller after recording a 7-5, 6-1 win against Spain's David Ferrer. The two Germans, who share the same coach in Dirk Hordoff, have never met on the ATP circuit, although Schuettler leads 3-2 in Challenger play. Elsewhere on day two, No. 8 seed David Nalbandian recorded a 6-3, 6-3 victory over lucky loser Jean-Rene Lisnard, the Frenchman who replaced Robby Ginepri, while No. 10 seed Sebastien Grosjean earned a second round meeting with Tim Henman after he defeated Italian qualifier Filippo Volandri 6-3, 6-4. Russia's Michael Youzhny caused the first upset of the day when he overcame No. 6 seed Jiri Novak 6-1, 6-4 to reach the second round in Hamburg for the first time, while Xavier Malisse defeated two-time finalist Alex Corretja, the No. 13 seed, 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-3. In the doubles, Tim Henman and Gustavo Kuerten defeated the American team of Jan-Michael Gambill and Graydon Oliver to set up a second round clash with Australian Open champions Michael Llodra and Fabrice Santoro. Henman and Kuerten, who teamed together for the first time last week in Rome, came through 6-4, 6-2. Jarkko Nieminen and Paradorn Srichaphan will meet No. 4 seed Jonas Bjorkman and Todd Woodbridge after they overcame the South African partnership of Chris Haggard and Robbie Koenig 6-3, 6-4. WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID: Moya: "I feel happy with the way I played today. He is a very good player. It really surprised me how he played. I think it was an exciting match to watch. I feel I was controlling the situation until I was a set and 4-2 up and serving for 5-2. But then, I kind of relaxed a little and he took advantage of it. I think it was a really good match줠It happens so many times when it looks like I have it easy to finish the match, I complicate myself and I relax a little bit and feel like I won the match already. But, he played those games brilliantly and then we were 5-all and I tried my best, but couldn't make it. But, still I feel I was controlling the match pretty well." On facing Nadal: "It's going to be a special match for both of us, I think. We've never played before, but we know each other very well since we have been practising a lot together the last few years. I've seen his progression. He's amazing, he's only 16, but he's able to play some great tennis. For sure, he's going to give a 100 percent and fight to win...[I first heard of him] a long time ago. Maybe when he was eight years old. He was the best in Mallorca for his age. He was beating all the guys easily. I didn't see him again until he was 12, but I heard about him. He really impresses me...[His success] doesn't surprise me, knowing him. I know him very well. Right after Monte Carlo and Barcelona, he played a Challenger and reached the finals. I think he's a better level than Challengers. Now, he comes here, he qualifies, he wins the match and he's still alive. It doesn't surprise me at all, the way he's playing, the way he behaves. He doesn't look like a 16 year old." Costa: "[My form] is not 100 percent, but I still have two tournaments to play [before Roland Garros] and we'll see. It's tough to say. I'm not playing the best of my career, but I'm trying. I'm practising, I'm fighting, I'm making everything. But, I need to win some more matches." Roddick: "It was good, I'm just happy to get a win. You guys caught me not in my best form during the last couple of weeks, and Ivan played really well last week. So I think he was coming here in good form, so it is nice줠I hit my forehand well today. On big points especially, and I didn't make a lot of stupid errors. "I definitely think the European weather has more of a factor than the European clay. I think the European weather changes from week to week, I mean, last year it was sunny and hot and this week it's kind of playing tricks on us a little bit. I definitely think that is a factor." -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.csie.ntu.edu.tw) ◆ From: 61.230.107.39 -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.csie.ntu.edu.tw) ◆ From: 61.230.107.39 -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.csie.ntu.edu.tw) ◆ From: 61.225.198.88 ※ 編輯: MARSAFIN 來自: 61.225.198.88 (05/14 12:13)
