For the first time since Monday, the sun came out at the Internationaler Raiffeisen Grand Prix and so did the quality tennis as top-seeded Andy Roddick defeated Richard Krajicek in straight sets to move into the quarterfinals here in St. Poelten. In a well-played first set, Roddick led 5-2 before Krajicek came storming back to close to 5-4. With Krajicek serving, Roddick had several break points and set points to take the set 6-4, but Krajicek extended the young American to 5-all before falling 7-5. Roddick then cruised through the first set. In the second quarterfinal of the afternoon, Martin Verkerk continued his hot play of late, coming up with clutch tennis at important moments and showing no fear of coming to the net on the red clay. Saretta, a semifinalist here a year ago, was visibly frustrated during the match hitting one ball out of the stadium as he let opportunities slip away to take control and extend the match to a third set. David Sanchez was efficient in his straight set win over Mario Ancic, needing just one hour and four minutes to dispatch the 19-year-old Croatian, while Russian Nikolay Davydenko fought off set points in the first set down 3-5 against Anthony Dupuis to win 7-5, 6-1, taking 10 of the last 11 games. Davydenko is looking to join Andre Agassi and Roger Federer as the only players to have won more than two titles on the ATP circuit this year. WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID: Roddick: "That was a good win for me, at 5-2 up a break in the first set, you can't be too hard on yourself when Krajicek holds with the kind of serve he has. And when he broke me, I think he had like one or two great passing shots." "In the second set I played solid, clean tennis. I had my chances and I took advantage of them - that's the difference between average tennis and good tennis." "I'm happy to be in the semifinals here. Until now, I hadn't won two matches in a row on the clay here in Europe, so this has been a good week." "Either Sanchez or Ancic next... they are both good players, different styles, but it will be a tough match either way. I played Ancic in the final of the Australian Open Juniors when I won and I also beat him the year I won US Open Juniors, so that bodes well." Verkerk: "I think the key was those two tiebreaks and playing good tennis at those moments. I was really happy with the way I played aggressively and came to net. Obviously I play better on fast surface and my game suits that, but I always practiced on clay courts when I was growing up, so I am comfortable playing on it as well." "I was tired after the quarterfinal match in Rome, so I took last week off and rested a bit. I think that helped alot." on playing doubles with Krajicek this week "It had always been a dream of mine to play doubles with Krajicek, so it was great this week. He's a great champion and absolute legend back in Holland. What he did for tennis in that country will never be done again." Sanchez: "I think I played pretty solid. Today the key for me was my serve. I think I had a very high percentage of first serves and when you get the first serve in you can take the initiative on the points." "The last two yeras I've made the quarters here so I always have my chances here. Now that I have a little more experience than in the past, I know how to take advantage of my opportunities." about Roland Garros "I think for some players, they don't want to play the week before a big tournament they would rather relax. But for me, I like to play matches and be match-tough. When you get to the final, it might be a little tough with the number of days off in between, but if you win the tournament before going to Roland Garros that can be a good thing." Davydenko: "I was making alot of mistakes when I got up 3-1 and when I found myself down 5-3 I was trying to put more balls in the court. I kept fighting, cut down on my mistakes and started playing better and better. I just rolled from there." on going for his third ATP title "The number of titles really means nothing to me at all. I wasn't thinking about the title when I got here. I just want to play better and better with each match." -- 說起來,20年,也差不多是法國人再度獲勝的好時機哪… -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.csie.ntu.edu.tw) ◆ From: 61.230.97.77 -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.csie.ntu.edu.tw) ◆ From: 61.230.97.77
