Safin, who missed the French Open last month with a wrist problem, has been forced out after failing to recover from a hand injury. And Frenchwoman Mauresmo, seeded sixth for this year's Championships, has been ruled out by a rib problem. The absence of 18th seed Safin has given Tim Henman a seemingly easier first round match, as 34th ranked Alex Corretja - initially drawn against Henman - has taken the Russian's place in the draw. Corretja will now play qualifier Michal Mertinak of Slovakia, with Henman facing Czech player Tomas Zib. Safin has been troubled by injuries for much of the season. The 2000 US Open champion missed the first round of Russia's Davis Cup tie against the Czech Republic in February. He then twisted his right ankle at the NASDAQ-100 Open in Miami in March. That injury forced Safin out of the Davis Cup quarter-final against Argentina, which Russia lost 5-0. He joins Goran Ivanisevic, Tommy Haas, Richard Krajicek and Sweden's Magnus Norman among the men who will miss the action at the All England Club. Mauresmo was a semi-finalist at Wimbledon last year, although she prefers playing on clay. Her coach Loic Courteau said in a statement that the injury impeded her service action. Mauresmo joins Monica Seles and Anna Kournikova among the names missing from the women's competition. She has been replaced in the women's draw by the 33rd-seeded player, Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia.
