Russians Take Center Stage in Sydney
Sydney was an all-Russian affair on the first day of play. Russians Anastasia
Myskina, Vera Zvonareva and Elena Bovina (right) all won their first round
matches.
No.5 seed Myskina encountered the most difficult time, taking three sets to
defeat Lisa Raymond, 61 26 64. Raymond fought hard in the third set, saving
two match points before eventually falling to the No.1 Russian.
Zvonareva pocketed a solid win over the Australian No.2 Nicole Pratt, 62 63.
She went on to celebrate her first win of the season by visiting hundreds of
fans at the adidas International Fan Fest.
Alongside, Elena Bovina maintained control over Magui Serna, taking the match
64 61. The two had equal wins over each other preceding the match, with
Bovina now taking the lead to 2-1.
Justine Henin-Hardenne and Amelie Mauresmo were on hand in Sydney to talk to
members of the media at WTA Tour’s All Access Hour. While chatting,
world No.1 Justine Henin-Hardenne remarked on her first tournament of the
year saying, "I had really good preparation after the Championships. I went
to Bora Bora on vacation for two weeks before resuming training again with
Pat (Etcheberry) in Florida. The training seemed to be a lot easier this time.
I feel like I'm better prepared for this season."
No.3 seed Amelie Mauresmo commented on the new season as well.
"I feel good going into this tournament. I feel like I'm physically able,
and I think this will be a great warm-up for the Australian Open."
Featured matches on Monday include Conchita Martinez taking on Magdalena
Maleeva. This will be the eleventh meeting between the two, with Martinez
holding a perfect record against Maleeva.
Australian wildcard Cindy Watson will face No.7 seed Chanda Rubin in the
featured night match.
