Safin Looms as Open Dark Horse
Powerful Russian Marat Safin continues to move ominously through the Australian
Open field, advancing on Wednesday to the third round following a 7-6, 6-4, 4
-6, 6-4 win over talented Finn Jarkko Nieminen. Safin, an Australian Open
finalist in 2002, is unseeded after ending last season ranked No. 77. Safin
played just 13 tournaments in 2003 as he battled a nagging wrist injury.
Arguably the most dangerous 蟐loater' in the draw, Safin next meets veteran
American Todd Martin. The 2000 US Open champion ended last season with six
consecutive first-round losses. The Australian Open is his first tournament
of the season.
It's difficult to come back and play similar to how you used to play after
being out fot six months. Your muscles get a little weak. You need matches to
bring back the power in your legs.?
