Safin returns to Davis Cup The draw has been made for the Belarus v Russia tie, taking place in Minsk, and is as follows: R1: Vladimir Voltchkov (BLR) v Igor Andreev (RUS) R2: Max Mirnyi (BLR) v Marat Safin (RUS) R3: Max Mirnyi/Vladimir Voltchkov (BLR) v Marat Safin/Mikhail Youzhny (RUS) R4: Max Mirnyi (BLR) v Igor Andreev (RUS) R5: Vladimir Voltchkov (BLR) v Marat Safin (RUS) Today the draw of the first round clash between Belarus and Russia took place at the Mayor's office in Minsk in front of an audience of more than 150 dignitaries and media. “This is a significant event that the draw is being held in the restored Minsk Town Hall, which was been constructed more than 500 years ago. I hope this historic building will bring luck to the teams” said Mikhail Pavlov, Chairman of the Organizing Committee and Mayor of Minsk City. Referee Jorge Dias (Portugal) conducted the draw alongside representatives from both Federations. The first rubber to take place on Friday at 15:00 will be between Russia’s Igor Andreev and Vladimir Voltchkov of Belarus followed by Belarus No. 1 Max Mirnyi taking on 2004 Australian Open runner-up Marat Safin. The second day will begin with the Presentation Ceremony. After that, spectators will see the doubles rubber between Mirnyi/Volchkov and Safin/Mikhail Youzhny. On the final day Mirnyi will start against Andreev before the final rubber between Voltchkov and Safin. “I accepted any outcome of the draw but I have no doubt that there will be some changes in the Russia team. We all know that the Russians are strong but we will battle hard and play for victory” said Belarus Captain Sergei Teterin. Shamil Tarpischev, Russia’s Captain had a number of players that could play in the singles rubbers. “The choice of players before a match is determined by their condition. Therefore, I have chosen Igor Andreev from three equal players. As for Safin, he told me that was ready to play so I should let him fight,” said Tarpischev. The final line-up will depend on the condition of Safin tomorrow. The former US Open Champion played the final of the Australian Open on Sunday after battling through three five-set matches en route. Despite only arriving in Minsk on Wednesday Safin announced that he was ready to take on Belarus “I am feeling perfectly well and ready to play,” Safin told journalists. The meeting of these neighbouring countries has caused an extraordinary interest and has been taking leading positions on the pages of newspapers and TV news releases during the past two last weeks in both countries. Approximately 200 representatives of mass-media will cover this event and nearly 5,000 spectators are expected to take positions in the stands of the Football Manege. Also in attendance will be President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenka, and Boris Yeltsin, the first President of the Russian Federation, who traditionally doesn't miss any Russian Davis Cup matches. http://www.daviscup.com/news/newsarticle.asp?id=12721 -- 你要支持Escude到什麼時候?
